The Origin of Cupid

Its that time of year again. All the cute little candies, stuffed animals, and cupids are filling up the super market holiday isles. That's right it is Valentine's Day. Ever wonder where that cute little cupid came from? Well, I'm gonna let you know. According to Roman mythology, Cupid is the son of the Goddess of Love, Venus. He was known as the God of Erotic Love & Beauty. According to Greek mythology, Eros (aka Cupid), is the son of Aphrodite. Eros was known as God of Lust, Love, & Intercourse. Eros was also worshiped as a fertility deity. They both had the same basic look--young, with wings, bow & arrow. Cupid has remained the symbol of love throughout the years, with only slight changes in his appearance. He has always been pictured as a young winged boy or baby armed with a bow and arrow. However, today he carries arrows that are shaped like hearts and looks like a cartoon character instead of an actual child, which makes him much more commericially marketable lovable. I didn't know that, thanks for the insight. It's amazing how things can get so commercialized over time.
