It was obvious even before Heidi and Spencer were spotted hanging out together in Costa Rica, that the divorce was a publicity stunt, but no one really knew why they opted to pull off the ridiculous sham. Life & Style magazine sat down with the couple and found out the entire story.

The couple had spent all $10 million of their savings and were going to file for bankruptcy when they got the bright idea of trying to earn more money via rumors and scandal. Scared they would lose everything, they decided a controversal and wild public divorce would help solve some their money problems. They even admitted there was a British TV network interested in making the split into a television series! Unfortunately for them, the opportunity didn't follow through and disappointed they called off the divorce. This was when their Costa Rica getaway was exposed.

Spencer explained to Life & Style:
“The divorce was real - just the idea behind it was different than most people's. Divorcing was the only way to keep Heidi's career going because everyone hated me so much. Look at Sandra Bullock - her divorce from Jesse James was the best thing to happen to her image."

If they were willing to put up with such harsh media coverage to get out of debt, the situation is probably still too big for them to be free just yet. Spencer admitted that he's a little terrified he won't be able to help very much financially.
"I can't make regular money because I was playing such an unlikeable character on TV to keep my checks coming. Who wants to hire the jerk from The Hills?"
It is assumed the couple will continue to file for bankruptcy.
