It's going to be a tough decision for America to make after watching the top three finalists perform last night on American Idol. Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart gave it their all, proving to judge Randy Jackson that they are all "in it to win it!"
The finalists had to sing three songs each last night - a personal selection, a number from producer Jimmy Iovine and a tune from the judges - and nobody disappointed.
In the first round, the finalists were mentored by Beyonce, who seemed to have faith in all three of them. Scotty started out the show with his personal pick Amazed by Lonestar, which almost brought judge Steven Tyler to tears. Lauren came out next to sing Faith Hill's Wild One, which gave her a chance to channel her insecurities and run wild and free on stage. Haley took a major risk during her performance by singing Led Zeppelin's What Is and What Should Never Be, but the soulful singer definitely nailed it! Even after tripping on stage, the fearless Reinhart kept her composure and finished the song strongly, making her the unanimous judge's pick to win Round One.
Round Two had the competitors singing songs handpicked for them by show producer and their long-time mentor Jimmy Iovine. For Scotty, Iovine chose Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not by country duo Thompson Square. Scotty played it cool and collected, looking comfortable as usual with the help of his guitar. The judge's loved it and Jackson even compared Scotty to country legend Garth Brooks. Iovine picked The Band Perry's If I Die Young for 16-year-old Lauren. A rip in her stockings right before going on stage looked like it made Lauren a bit nervous, and the judge's noted some technical errors, but overall the performance was praised. Haley was assigned Fleetwood Mac classic Rhiannon by Iovine, which the judge's complimented, although it was obvious they weren't blown away as they were with her first performance. At the end of the round, Steven chose Lauren as his favorite, but Scotty won the round by getting Jennifer and Randy's pick.
By the third round the contestants seemed to become exhausted, but that didn't stop them from performing. The judges chose Kenny Rodgers' She Believes In Me for Scotty to sing, and his ability to nail the chorus won him their praise. Lauren gave her best performance of the night in a long, blue gown singing I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack, which gave Jennifer goosebumps. Haley finished out the show with the powerful Alanis Morissette anthem You Oughta Know, and although it seemed like she might be losing her voice towards the end, she pulled off another powerful performance, making her Steven's favorite for Round Three. However, it was Lauren that won the round by winning over both Randy and Jennifer.
The judges have made it clear that any of these three finalists have what it takes to be the next American Idol. Find out who America picks to move onto the finals tonight at 8 on Fox!
