Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows beat out Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked for the #1 spot at the box office over the weekend. Although it earned far less than the first installment two years ago, Sherlock Holmes still had a solid weekend, earning $40 million. The first installment's opening weekend earnings were $62.3 million.

Alvin and the Chipmunks came in second with $23.5 million. Followed by Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol with $13 million. Coming in at #4 was New Year's Eve with $7.4 million and rounding out the top 5 was The Sitter with $4.4 million.
