In our society today, reality TV is one of the biggest phenomenon’sout there. For some strange reason, we have such a fascination with watchingpeople’s personal lives unfold right before our eyes. The Hunger Games starJennifer Lawrence is just one of the few who have realized how crazy obsessedwe are with reality television, but let’s just say she’s not exactly praisingit!
She graces the cover of the latest issue of Parade magazineand compares THG to reality TV, saying, “The books hold up a terrible kind ofmirror: This is what our society could be like if we became desensitized to traumaand to each other’s pain.”
If you haven’t been able to catch up on the latest crazethat is The Hunger Games, allow me to fill you in: the story is based on asociety that forces children to fight each other to the death in a televisedevent for all to watch until only one is left standing. As brutal as thisconcept might sound, it also doesn’t really sound too far off from what wewatch today.
Lawrence brings up the queens of reality TV who haveabsolutely no problem exposing their troubles for the world to see – the Kardashians. She said, “I was watching the Kardashian girl [Kim] getting divorced, and that’sa tragedy for anyone. But they’re using it for entertainment, and we’rewatching it.”
What do you think about what Jennifer had to say? Is sheright? Is reality TV the next The Hunger Games or is that a little overdramatic? Share your thoughts!
