Virtually all of Hollywood flocked to the desert for the Coachella Music Festival during the past two weekends. And with temperatures rising above 100 degrees, celebs took the opportunity to showcase some of the hottest upcoming summer styles. However, not ALL of the festival-bound stars pulled off the trend succesfully.
Take a look at stars who nailed summer looks -- and stars who failed -- so you can learn how to rock the trends with ease when the heat waves kick in!
The Boho Chic Look: HITS
This summer, jean shorts are shorter than ever, and with the right styling, this can make for a gorgeous bohemian look. Zoe Kravitz, with her handsome boyfriend Penn Badgley, rocked a woven, fringed crop-top with high-waisted shorts -- revealing a bit of her midriff, but not too much. The structure of the top, the cuffed shorts and the skinny belt make for a cohesive, polished overall look. Rosie Huntington-Whitley also nailed this style, opting for a daisy-patterned pair of jorts with a flowy white blouse. The ankle boots and blouse add a layer of sophistication to the super-casual shorts. And the blouse balances out the teeny shorts so that she's showing just the right amount of skin.
The Boho Chic Look: MISSES
It's one thing to gain inspiration from Woodstock. It's another thing to dress like you're an extra in a Janis Joplin biopic. Vanessa Hudgens went a little too extreme with her flower child ensemble. And the outfit isn't even flattering -- the flowy bra-top and high-waisted shorts cut her torso off awkwardly. And Emma Roberts' unbuttoned shorts, fringe-heavy bikini top and beat-up Converse seem better suited for a teenager at a waterpark than a celebrity at a music festival.
The Flirty Mini-Dress: HITS
Little dresses that show off a lot of leg are timeless summer pieces. Lea Michele (at a pool party off the festial grounds) and Diane Kruger (with her adorable beau Joshua Jackson) show us how it's DONE. Lea's white cotton cover-up dress is simple, sexy and breezy. The red bikini top adds a fun pop of color to the outfit, and those tan wedges are to die for. Diane went with a striped cotton mini-dress that's ever-so-casually off the shoulder. The brown belt adds some structure and shows off her bitty waist. Love.
The Flirty Mini-Dress: MISSES
Busy Phillips and Lindsay Lohan display what can go wrong with wearing a flirty mini-dress. Two words: unflattering cuts. Busy's dress (while the color is dreamy) cuts her waist off too high and makes her look bigger than she actually is. A belt or a blazer might have fixed the unflattering silhouette of the dress. And Lindsay's dress is WAY too short. Notice how she has that sweatshirt around her waist? Probably because she feared she would moon every festival-goer. The dress is also too tight, making her enviable figure look not-so-hot. Layering a long boyfriend-style button-down shirt could have resolved a few of the problems.
The Maxi Look: HITS
Long, flowing maxi dresses and jumpsuits are coming back with a vengeance this summer. And it's no surprise that fashionistas Nina Dobrev and Dita Von Teese school us on how to rock the look. Nina's bright red dress has a sexy low neckline that's perfect for summer -- and she added some shape to her look with a thick brown waistbelt. Dita pulled a similar move with her adorable berry-print jumpsuit by adding a thick sash at the waist. While mini-dresses look great with gladiator sandals (see Nina), Dita made the right choice by adding wedge heels to the cinched flowy pants. Otherwise the patterned jumpsuit could've resembled a clown costume.
The Maxi Look: MISSES
A chic flowy maxi dress can look like a shapeless potato sack without the proper styling. Kelly Osbourne's two-toned maxi veers into potato sack territory, especially with that flowing shawl hanging off her shoulders. And Nikki Reed's navy number is so loose it looks like it's about to fall off of her. Adding a belt could resolve the problem. Or instead, go for a maxi that has a flowy skirt, but is fitted through the waist.
