50 Shades of Grey has gone from being a self-published e-book to a number-one bestseller to a worldwide sensation to the next major studio movie trilogy in-the-making. So naturally, with all this attention on the project, Hollywood's race to nab the two coveted lead roles is ON.

Many fans have said that Ian Somerhalder would be the perfect seductive, brooding self-made billionaire Christian Grey -- and Ian commented on the book and his desire to play the role in an interview with Ryan Seacrest. Based on this interview -- it's clear that Ian is taking this very seriously.

VOTE: Which A-list pair should nab the lead roles in 50 Shades of Grey?

As soon as Ryan mentioned the book and the rumors about Ian playing Christian, Ian's eyes lit up. "I would definitely be up for that...It could be very, very amazing," he said. "That would be a really incredible thing. And hopefully that could pan out, I think...Beyond a shadow of a doubt, I think that would be a phenomenal opportunity."

Ian's enthusiastic, yet cryptic responses to the questions seem to imply he might know more about the likelihood of getting cast than he leads on. He mentioned that he picked up the book and started reading it recently. A busy star like Ian probably wouldn't dedicate time to read 50 Shades if he didn't know that he's on the short list for the role. Especially considering the book is very much targeted toward women.

While Ian already has a killer career thanks to Vampire Diaries, landing this role could be rocket him to A-list movie stardom in no time.

But is he the right man to fill Christian Grey's Prada loafers? Let's look at what he has to offer.

1. He looks the part. Christian is supposed to be a smoldering, undeniably handsome man with piercing gray eyes. Yep, okay. Let's check that one off the list.

2. His vampy resume. 50 Shades started off as Twilight fan fiction. Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele were originally based off of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. While Robert Pattinson would be the obvious choice, chances are the studio doesn't want to go SO on-the-nose. And Rob probably wants to move away from similar roles in blockbuster trilogies. Enter Ian. He plays a sexy, brooding vamp on Vampire Diaries, so that could make him the next logical choice.

3. He's not a major movie star. Generally speaking, these book-turned-studio-movie franchises AVOID going with big A-listers. Take K.Stew and R.Pattz, for example -- when they were cast in Twilight, they weren't major stars by any means. Jennifer Lawrence had been an indie actress pre-Hunger Games. Ian has had a steady career, but he's far from a household name. And his background in TV proves that he's got the chops to develop a character through many seasons (or in this case, movies).

Well, if Ian's not cast just yet, surely he's on the studio's list. The only hitch is that he's 34 and Christian is 27 when the movie starts. But nothing a little makeup and good lighting can't fix!

Is Ian the right choice? Who would YOU cast as Christian and Anastasia??
