Movies featuring superheroes, A-list actors and hot chicks brandishing weapons is a sure-fire blockbuster hit, right? Not necessarily!
The last decade has seen plenty of on-paper smashes with major names like Halle Berry and Sean Connery turn into box office and critical flops. In honor of Comic Con this weekend, check out our rundown of the 8 biggest superhero movie flops of the last decade!
1. Jonah Hex (2010)
This big-screen version of the comic book features Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Megan Fox. The comic is extremely popular, but the film? Not so much. Critics and audiences panned the movie and despite a $47 million budget, it only grossed just under $11 million worldwide. The movie was also nominated for two Razzies including Megan as Worst Actress!
2. Catwoman (2004)
Even the sexiest of A-listers make flops too. Catwoman cost $100 million to make but only grossed $82 million worldwide. (And you know the people that went were solely motivated by the photo above.) Shortly after winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Monster's Ball, Halle received the Razzie award for Worst Actress for Catwoman! Luckily, she had a sense of humor about it and even showed up to accept her Razzie in person! "I'd like to thank the rest of the cast. To give a really bad performance like mine, you need to have really bad actors," she said. And with that zinger, all is forgiven.
3. Elektra (2005)
Jennifer Garner plays the part of an international assassin in this movie, but the flick far from killed at the box office. It grossed just under $57 million off a $43 million budget and much of the money came from overseas due to her Croatian co-star Goran Visnjic. Elektra also received a staggeringly low 10% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Oof.
4. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
Loosely based on the comic book series of the same name, Sean Connery and the rest of the cast enjoyed some box office success with this movie, grossing just over $179 million on a $78 million budget (respectiable, but not extraordinary, heh). However, while Sean is usually praised for his acting, this film was given terrible reviews and received a 17 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
5. The Spirit (2008)
Let's be real. Samuel L. Jackson looks absolutely ridiculous here in his role as The Octopus. The movie was given terrible critic and audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed just $39 million worldwide--a huge flop considering the budget was much larger. However, The Spirit missed a Razzie nomination by a hair.
6. Sucker Punch (2011)
A hot chick brandishes weapons -- sounds like a recipe for success, right? Producers booked Vanessa Hudgens for this movie hoping that, but their wishes didn't quite pan out. Sucker Punch managed to at least recoup its expenses by grossing $90 million worldwide on an $82 million budget, but the film was given plenty of lukewarm reviews and didn't exactly boost anyone's career.
7. Ultraviolet (2006)
Milla Jovovich always looks smoking hot. Unfortunately, that doesn't make up for a bad script (about vampire-like symptoms in the year 2078) and mediocre acting. Moviegoers thought the same thing with Ultraviolet too. Despite a relatively small budget of $30 million, the movie barely made back what it spent by grossing just $31 million worldwide.
8. Aeon Flux (2005)
Charlize Theron can do much, much better than this. A horrible script about a post-apocalyptic future in 2415 did little to help, but her acting along with the rest of the cast was painful to watch. The movie lost money on its $62 million budget by grossing $52 million worldwide and ended up being nominated for a couple of Razzies!
So which superhero movie do you vote to be the WORST of them all??
