If the reports about today's opening ceremony in London for the 2012 Summer Olympics are true, then get ready for an all-out extravaganza!

The $43 million performance is set to feature 30 Mary Poppins descending from the sky to defeat Voldemort from the Harry Potter series, in addition to other crazy pieces of eye-candy according to The Globe and Mail. For us at Hollywire though, it's the musical performances that get us most excited. And while the closing ceremony typically features the bigger names, the opening ceremony performances are of a much higher quality. Here are some of our favorite summer Olympics opening ceremony performances from the last 20 years!

2008 Beijing Olympics

The opening ceremony for the Beijing games was opera heavy with both the Beijing Opera and Chinese Opera performing. However, it was the duet of You and Me between classical crossover artist Sarah Brightman and chinese popstar Liu Huan that got everyone talking and cemented Sarah's status as an international superstar.

2004 Athens Olympics

In addition to DJ Tiesto becoming the first ever DJ to spin at the Olympics, a highly elaborate performance of Oceania from the always elaborate Bjork was the highlight of the night. You kind of had a feeling the woman who wore a swan dress to the Oscars wouldn't hold back on the world's biggest stage. She certainly didn't -- a gigantic cloth of a map of the world that appeared as an extension of her dress engulfed all the athletes on the field!

2000 Sydney Olympics

Australia used all of their best local resources when it came to finding performers for the opening ceremony in Sydney. Grease star Olivia Newton-John, dancer Adam Garcia and Aussie pop star Nikki Webster were just some of the local talent who appeared on the world's biggest stage.

1996 Atlanta Olympics

The last time the summer games were held stateside, they managed to snag one of the world's biggest artists in Celine Dion for the opening ceremony. '70s soul legend and Atlanta native Gladys Knight also thriled the home crowd with her performance of the Ray Charles classic Georgia on My Mind.

1992 Barcelona Olympics

Barcelona's opening ceremony for the '92 Olympics is considered by many to be the best of all time. Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto put together a dazzling musical score for the night, while a recording of Queen's Freddie Mercury and Spanish singer Montserrat Caballe singing Barcelona brought the crowd to their feet. He was scheduled to perform at the ceremony alongside her, but died eight months prior to the games.
