One of America's most prominent heroes, Neil Armstrong, has passed away at the age of 82. The legendary American astronaut known for making "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," as the first man EVER to walk on the moon, died on Saturday after suffering complications from cardiovascular procedures.
Armstrong was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft, the first spacecraft to land on the moon. He was also the first man to exit the craft and step foot on the moon, a moment we described to an Australian TV interview earlier this year, saying, "It was special and memorable, but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do." Armstrong and his fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin walked around the moon for just about 3 hours, taking photographs, gathering samples of moon rocks and other lunar materials and doing experiments.
"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them. As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero," NASA administrator Charles Bolden stated of the astronaut's passing. Shortly after the news of Armstrong's death broke, the celebrities took to their Twitter accounts to express their condolences.
