In all her outrageousness, Lady Gaga is no stranger to being ridiculed, as anyone who wears a dress made of meat is liable to be. But she doesn’t seem to approve of the latest ridicule, courtesy of Die Antwoord.
The South African rap group’s new video for “Fatty Boom Boom” has Gaga (played by a male impersonator) attacked by rebels, discovering a slimy creature in her netherparts, and ultimately eaten by a lion. (As happens, when one is wearing a side of beef.) That’s not to say that this is the absolute craziest thing you’ll see in “Fatty Boom Boom,” which also features a lot of controversial racial imagery such as white hoods and blackface, amongst other extreme costume choices.
So where does Lady Gaga fit in to all this? Well, apparently Die Antwoord didn’t like her suggestion that they open for her when she played South Africa in late November/early December, and thus found it fitting to have her devoured by a large predatory feline.
Not surprisingly, the “Marry The Night” singer was not exactly flattered by the depiction, particularly the gross-out moment featuring a bona fide "little monster" pulled out of her genitalia. (It's a South African king cricket dubbed a "Parktown Prawn," if you're curious.)
So it’s no wonder she fired back on Twitter: “i fink u freaky but you don't have a hit. hundred thousand tIckets sold in SA. #thatmyshit”
She followed up with: “i guess its not a good idea to tell someone you're a fan. never mind! we get it, you're not a little monster. WE GOT IT.”
Die Antwoord shot back: “lady... even tho u r 'larger' than us... we still cooler than u... plus we don't have prawns in our private...”
Clearly, Die Antwoord’s controversial strategy paid off — there’s a lot more eyes on this video than there ever would be without the Gaga parody. But was all this called for?
