The fall Oscar-baiting movie season tends to be overloaded with biopics, so it's no wonder that not one, but TWO films about legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock this fall.
The two competing films in question are Hitchock and The Girl -- higher profile of the two being Hitchcock, starring Anthony Hopkins as the titular Master of Suspense, with Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh (production still above), Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins. Pretty excellent casting, right? As the cast of characters might imply, the biopic is set during the filming of Psycho in 1959 and centers on the romance between Hitch and his wife (played by Helen Mirren). You know how they say scary movies make for great foreplay? Well, we can only imagine what directing one of the greatest horror flicks of all time leads to.
So which Hitch will be the more convincing? Take a look at the side-by-side of Anthony (on the right) and The Girl's Alfred, Toby Jones.
Anthony Hopkins vs. Toby Jones As Alfred Hitchcock!
Clearly the makeup artists have done an impressive job making Hopkins virtually unrecognizable as Hitchcock — meaning Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as an uncanny Honest Abe lookalike, will get a run for its money at the Oscars. And unless Hopkins totally bombs it (which is highly unlikely), he seems a lock for a Best Actor nod, too.
Meanwhile, Toby just can’t catch a break. Back in 2005, he starred opposite Sandra Bullock in Infamous, playing Truman Capote. Unfortunately, Philip Seymour-Hoffman’s Capote stole all his thunder, and now it looks like Hopkins will do the same — though The Girl, about Hitch’s romance with The Birds star Tippi Hedren, has been made for HBO, not theatrical release. (At least that gives him a shot at an Emmy.)
Hitchcock will premiere at this year's AFI Fest in Los Angeles before a November 23 release.
Judging from the pics, which Hitcock flick are you excited to check out?
