What a year. We got songs like Call Me Maybe and Gangnam Style, kickass women such as Rebel Wilson and Lena Dunham, plus a few new musicians we think will stand the test of time. (We’re looking at you, Frank Ocean.) Of course, with the good comes the bad –- or maybe just the stuff we could live without. (Ya’ll know we're talking about Honey Boo Boo.)
With 2012 coming to a close, it’s time to take a look back at some of the major breakout stars that left an impact on pop culture these past 12 months.
Are we sure we want 2013 to come? Can't we just relive this year all over again?
1. Carly Rae Jepsen
Breakout: Creating that song that will forever be stuck into your head, Call Me Maybe. You can thank Justin Bieber for this one.
What’s Next: Carly's currently on the road with the Biebs for his Believe tour, performing songs from her debut album Kiss.
2. Lena Dunham
Breakout: Getting everyone talking with her HBO series Girls as star, writer and producer. On top of that, she scored a $3.5 million book deal for her "kinda advice" book.
What’s Next: We've seen the trailer for season two of Girls and all we have to say is this: we're stoked! We'll be watching while reading her book Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's Learned.
3. Ezra Miller
Breakout: The role of flamboyant Patrick alongside Emma Watson and Logan Lerman in the film adaption of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
What’s Next: Next year, he'll star as Leon in Madame Bovary alongside Paul Giamatti. We're sure we'll get us talking once again.
Breakout: For better or worse, two words to define 2012: "Gangnam Style."
What’s Next: It's been reported that Psy recently recorded a song with rapper 2 Chainz. We predict many collaborations in 2013 with a little Gangnam Style mixed in.
5. Honey Boo Boo
Breakout: The masses have been falling love with her (or just falling in love with mocking her) on her TLC reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
What’s Next: The show got picked up for ANOTHER season and the family will star in a special holiday episode airing this month. Adam Levine won't be happy with this news.
6. Gabby Douglas
Breakout: Dominating the 2012 Summer Olympics as part of the Fab Five U.S.A. Gymnastics team.
What’s Next: Besides training for the next summer Olympics, she released her memoir Grace, Gold and Glory: My Leap of Faith earlier this month!
7. Diego Boneta
Breakout: While he may have had guest starring roles on Pretty Little Liars and 90210, it was his role in Rock of Ages alongside Julianne Hough that put him on the map.
What’s Next: Continuing to be a part of MTV's Underemployed, he's currently filming In the Blood alongside Cam Gigandet.
8. Lana Del Rey
Breakout: Sure, she was starting to get her name out there at the beginning of this year. But it was her infamous Saturday Night Live performance that did the trick in making her a household name, for better or worse.
What’s Next: After rereleasing her album Paradise last month, she's set to drop her second single off the album, Cola.
9. Frank Ocean
Breakout: Frank's been in the game for a while, working more behind-the-scenes writing tracks for Justin BIeber and John Legend. He appeared on Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne album and dropped his album Channel Orange. He also took to Tumblr to come out as a homosexual and gained support from the likes of Jay-Z and Beyonce.
What’s Next: Continuing to write music for artists like Alicia Keys, he's also creating plenty of Grammy buzz for 2013.
10. Sam Claflin
Breakout: Sam certainly wasn't the name from Snow White and the Huntsman that ended up getting the most attention. That, surprisingly, turned out to be the director. But we wish the attention had all been on his role as William than that Robsten cheating scandal.
What’s Next: Being a part of the next big franchise -- he's the charismatic Finnick in Catching Fire. He's a potential scene-stealer in the flick, which by the looks of him is not surprising.
Breakout: Taking home the win on NBC's singing competition show The Sing-Off. They then released their EP PTX Volume 1 and their holiday album PTXmas.
What’s Next: They're gearing up to hit the road in 2013 and we can only expect HUGE things for this a cappella group!
12. Blue Ivy
Breakout: Becoming the most powerful baby in Hollywood thanks to her parents Beyonce and Jay-Z.
What’s Next: Continuing to be the most powerful baby in Hollywood thanks to her parents Beyonce and Jay-Z.
13. Rebel Wilson
Breakout: People first noticed Rebel when she appeared in a small role in 2011's Bridesmaids, but it was her breakout parts in The Bachelorette and Pitch Perfect that got people uncontrollably laughing.
What’s Next: Playing a bodybuilder in the upcoming comedy Pain & Gain with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson. (Yes, The Rock.)
14. Quvenzhane Wallis
Breakout: Her acting debut in Beasts of Southern Wild as the precocious Hushpuppy. The scrappy indie has received rave reviews, Independent Spirit Award nominations, and some Oscar buzz to boot.
What’s Next: Besides a potential Oscar nomination, she's starring alongside Brad Pitt in the 2013 film Twelve Years a Slave.
