Who said you need to be able to sing live to make it in music?
It used to be a requirement for singers to sound better in concert than their studio albums, but these days, plenty of performers ride on a prayer and a backing track when they perform. And as Beyonce demonstrated during her inauguration performance, lip-syncing isn't even reserved for the tone deaf acts that are topping the charts! Check out our roundup of the 10 most notorious lip-syncers.
It wasn't just that Ashlee was totally busted for attempting to lip-sync that made her Saturday Night Live performance so epic. The jig that followed was both utterly bizarre and amazing at the same time, and then she had the balls to blame the incident on her band afterwards! Fortunately for music, Ashlee's career never fully recovered afterwards.
We're not surprised that Ashley lip-syncs when she performs, but we are amazed that she's so terrible at it.
Back when we were all total suckers in 2005 and supported LiLo's music career, she tried to promote her albums with "live performances" that resembled trainwrecks more than anything else. At best, she kinda-sorta sang while she was drowned out by a backing track and her band. But most of the time, she didn't even attempt to bust out her drunken karaoke level singing.
In 2007, Britney's backing track started to skip while performing in Orlando and she was busted for lip-syncing. Then she tried to sing and, well, we kinda preferred the first option more.
Back in 1989, Milli Vanilli were the biggest pop act in the world... until they were busted for lip-syncing during a live show when the recording of their track begin to skip. And if that wasn't bad enough, it was revealed soon after that they weren't even singing on their own records! They remain the only performers in Grammy history who were forced to give back the award they won.
It's so amazing, they sound exactly the same as they did 10 years ago... oh, right. During a 2007 performance, the Spice Girls didn't even try to act like they weren't lip-syncing, sauntering around stage to the exact same track fans can hear on their sophomore album Spiceworld.
When J. Lo launched her singing career back in 1999 and gave her debut performance soon after, she made it clear we were going to be treated to a lot of lip-syncing in the future. But hey, at least she can dance and put on a show unlike some of the other people on this list.
You know you've got vocal issues when you have to lip-sync while rapping. But that's exactly what happened during the 2007 BET Awards, when Fiddy's pre-recorded track went haywire and he pretty much just walked around the arena for a few minutes, made a plug for Vitamin Water and walked off the stage.
The Biebs got plenty of flack during this 2010 VMA performance, where it was made pretty obvious that he was singing along to a pre-recorded track. Despite denying this after the show, Justin has gone on to sing live during almost of all his gigs since then.
We all know Jennifer can sing. But during major events like the Super Bowl, it's common practice to sing along to pre-recorded tracks and this was Exhibit A.
