Ariana Grande has been skyrocketing to the top in recent months, especially since the release of her hit single “The Way” featuring Mac Miller just last month. Since then, she’s released her flawless cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Believe In You and Me” and teamed up with Mika for his new single “Popular.” But all of this is just the beginning for Ariana as she’s wrapping up work on her debut album Daydreaming, set for release this year!

Chelsea Briggs caught up with the 19-year-old star at the Radio Disney Music Awards to dish on getting compared to the likes of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston and what fans can take away from her album.

Being lumped in the same category as Mariah and Whitney is something that only a few talented artists get to experience, and Ariana is definitely one of them, getting constant comparisons to the two vocalists. “It’s not real. I’m just so honored to have my name used in the same sentence,” she said. “It’s very cool. [Mariah] has been an inspiration to me –- her and Whitney Houston -– my whole life, so it’s an incredible compliment and it means a lot of me.”

Calling Daydream “personal, but relatable,” Ariana hopes her fans take away the happiness and healing that she experiences when she listens to musicians like India Arie. With a voice like that, it shouldn’t be a problem!
