Joey Fatone -– a.k.a. former member of NSYNC -– knows a thing or two about growing up in the spotlight, just like One Direction, The Wanted and Justin Bieber are doing these days. While he may not have caused controversy like the Biebs has for pretty much all of 2013 thus far, he does have one piece of advice for the 19-year-old.

"Don't be a douche. That's plain and simple,” Joey told HuffPost Live. “You get this bug from the celebrity thing, where you're very on top of the world and everyone's 'yessing' you to death, so you're like, 'I can get away with this. I can do that.' Not to say that he might be doing anything wrong -- or he might be in the wrong mix of people, in his camp.

Joey continued, "I know Scooter Braun very well and he's a great guy, very cool. I've known him for many years. He's his manager and does as much as he can. But [Justin’s] a kid. You're going to have fun. You're going to lash out. You're going to make mistakes. Everybody does."

Joey does have a point that JB is still a kid. He may have gone through a lot these past few years and was forced to grow up, but at the end of the day, he’s still a 19-year-old boy. But here’s the big question: since he’s in the public eye pretty much 24/7 and has young fans around the world idolizing him, should he take that into consideration and shape up?

Justin pointed all of this out last month to Us Weekly, saying, “The biggest misconception about me is that I’m a bad person. I get upset about that. I have a big heart. I want to be a good role model, but some people want me to fail. I’m young and I make mistakes. That’s part of growing up.”

He added, “I know who I am and I’m not gonna let negativity towards me bring me down. I’m a positive person and I plan on staying that way.”

Okay, what do you think?

Do you agree with Joey that Justin should straighten up, or with Justin on the fact that he’s just a kid?
