Isn’t it about time for another teen coming-of-age dramedy?
The Way, Way Back was the biggest news out of Sundance this year, selling to Fox Searchlight for a cool $10 million ― in no doubt thanks to such bankable comedic talents as Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, Toni Collette, and more.
Now we get our first glimpse at the film’s trailer, and we have to see ― it looks like a funny feel-good movie that should be the perfect antidote to all those big, loud summer blockbusters.

It looks like Steve is foregoing some of the likability he’s built up in many movie roles, and instead going along The Office route of playing a jerk. He’s the stepfather of the main character Duncan, played by Liam James, who develops a crush on AnnaSophia Robb. (And who can blame him for that?)
The key relationship in the film seems to be between Sam Rockwell’s character and Duncan, with supporting turns from Amanda Peet and Allison Janney in addition to the above-named stars. And a lot of it takes place at a water park, so what could be more perfect for the summer?
It opens July 5.
