We’ve been waiting eight long years for the identity of the titular mom on How I Met Your Mother to be revealed, and now it’s finally happened. Leave it to this clever CBS sitcom to do the honors the day after Mother’s Day!

So who did she turn out to be? Series regular Robin (Cobie Smulders)? One of Ted’s former flings? Past guest star Britney Spears? (Okay, that was a long shot.)

As it turns out, the mother is none of these ― in a move that has some thinking the reveal came off a bit anticlimactic.

We’ve known for quite some time that a Mystery Woman carrying a yellow umbrella had caught Ted’s eye, and that she’d probably end up being the mother. That ruled out past potential mothers like Robin and Stella. (Robin has long been referred to on the show as “Aunt Robin,” anyway. But hey, we never know what twists this show will throw at us!)

There have been a lot of teases as to who the mother is and when she’ll be revealed, with Ted dating a bunch of guest stars (including Sarah Chalke and Rachel Bilson) who ultimately didn’t end up being the mother, either. The show dropped clues that the mother was Ted’s ex’s roommate and would play in the band at Robin and Barney’s wedding, and yet we never caught a glimpse of her… until last night’s finale.

Those expecting some sort of twist where the mother turned out to be someone we’d glimpsed on the show before were mistaken, however. She’s a brand-new character played by Cristin Milioti who is perhaps best known in the sitcom world for playing a “very sexy baby” on 30 Rock. (Why she is carrying the same yellow umbrella with her years later on a day that appears to be sunny is a mystery yet to be revealed.)

So is this really, truly the mother? Or is this some kind of cruel tease?

Season Nine will be the final season for How I Met Your Mother, so yes, it’s time for this reveal. “It was a pretty big umbrella to fill, casting the title role in a series that's been on the air for eight years,” co-creator Carter Bays said of the casting, adding that they “look forward to getting to know her ― and the character she plays ― much better in the coming final season." It's been hinted at that most or all of the final season will take place around Robin and Barney's wedding.

Are we satisfied with this? Or, in a show that so often recalls jokes from the past, do we wish there'd been a more clever reveal? Did we want it to be someone we'd seen before in passing? We can't rule out that the show still has some tricks up its sleeve before Ted and this umbrella owner finally get around to making babies, but all signs point to this being the woman the whole show is centered around. Let's hope she's worth it!
