For a moment there, Christoph Waltz probably thought he was in another Quentin Tarantino movie.

Celebrities attending the Cannes Film Festival this week are expecting a lot of glitzy red carpet appearances, rubbing elbows with the who’s who of the filmmaking world, and maybe some soaking up of French culture. What they aren’t expecting is all of this to be interrupted by gunshots.

That’s what happened tonight when the news program Le Grand Journal observed the panic of a crowd during an interview with the Django Unchained star and French actor Daniel Auteuil (both Jury members at the fest). Watch footage of the frightening incident below.

Up until this point, Christoph must have been having a wonderful week taking in the international films and striking a deal to join Robert De Niro in the cast of the upcoming action flick The Candy Store.

But things got a little scary when the crowd suddenly begin to panic and flee at the sound of two gunshots.

Fortunately, no one was injured — mainly because the gun wasn’t even real. The perpetrator, who has since been apprehended by French police, fired two blanks into the air and also had a fake grenade, according to Deadline.

The man’s reasons for doing this are unknown as of now, but hopefully the festival can continue as schedule and move on from this jarring incident.

Stay safe, Cannes!
