In addition to winning three trophies last night at the Billboard Music Awards, Justin Bieber also won the distinction of being the only artist to ever get booed for accepting a fan-voted award.

The teenage crooner beat out Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars for the Milestone Award, but not everyone in the crowd was happy about it. Sections of the crowd proceeded to boo Justin when he took to the stage and they only got louder once he started talking.

Perhaps it was the fact that Justin couldn't be bothered to take off his sunglasses or that he immediately launched into self-defense mode during his acceptance speech, but those in attendance simply didn't warm up to The Biebs last night.

"I'm 19 years old. I think I'm doing a pretty good job," he told the crowd in accepting the final award of the night. But when the Beliebers weren't entirely successful in drowning out the boos of the haters, his tone became agitated.

"This is not a gimmick. I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously. This other bull should not be spoken of," he said. The majority of the theater began jeering him and he finally backed off, thanking his family, management and fans for their support.

If by "other bull," he means attacking photographers, spitting at his neighbors and having his tour bus raided by cops because of a marijuana stench, we're going to call shenanigans on that. These are things which absolutely should (and will) be spoken of. Justin was also booed at one of his own concerts just two months ago.

The bottom line is that Justin has reached an age where he's too old to pull the "I'm just a kid" card. While we certainly wouldn't want to be forever judged for the hot mess antics we pulled as freshmen in college, Justin is now a young adult who knows the difference between right and wrong. If he does wrong, it's not the media blowing things out of proportion or people wanting to see him fail. Nobody is making him smoke weed, attack people or go on bratty Twitter rants.

Take a page from the Reese Witherspoon playbook. If you make a mistake, own up to it and move on. Everyone else will do the same.
