Summer movie season is that time of year when movies get bigger, louder, and more expensive than ever, with a ton of reboots and sequels heading our way. It’s increasingly rare for an original property to make it to the big screen, especially one with the same size and scope of a Marvel movie.

But there is one coming for us in a big way ― Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, which is basically Godzilla meets Transformers (even though technically neither Godzilla nor The Transformers are involved).

Pacific Rim is virtually star-free, instead focusing all of its budget on some colossal special effects. The cast includes Ron Perlman, Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day as humans who find the world under attack by subterranean monsters, and respond by building monsters of their own to fight back ― giant robots, to be exact.

It’s definitely one of summer’s biggest gambles, with a $150 million production budget but no name brand or major stars to sell it to audiences. That means the story and the effects alone will be depended upon to put asses in seats ― though moviegoers have never had a problem lining up for giant robots and monsters smashing through city buildings, and there’s no reason to expect that will change this year.

The movie should play pretty well here and may do even better internationally, since effects-heavy movies set in various countries without a lot of dialogue are what make the biggest splash globally. That seems to be exactly what we’re getting here.

Basically, this is the popcorn movie to end all popcorn movies.
