A huge superstar diva like Mariah Carey at the American Idol judge's table was supposed to help the show's ratings. Having her sit next to a fresher, more current diva like Nicki Minaj, and getting into catfights, made Season 12 look even more promising.

Unfortunately, despite Fox's best efforts, the show faced some of its lowest ratings yet this year... and now, after all the rumors, it's official that Mariah and Nicki won't be returning for another season.

The news was confirmed on Thursday by Nicki herself and Mariah's rep via Twitter.

"Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn't trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!" Nicki tweeted. Meanwhile, Mariah's rep confirmed that the singer is heading out on a world tour next year, which means she won't have time to participate in another season of Idol.

So far that means three judges are out (Randy Jackson confirmed his exit before Season 12 even ended). Final judge Keith Urban recently revealed that he has "no official information" on whether or not he'll be coming back, but as of now, it looks like producers are going for a clean sweep to completely revamp the judge's table. The most recent reports say that the plan is to have past Idol contestants, like Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson, fill the seats, although nothing's been confirmed yet.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the "superstar" route has worked for either Idol or The X-Factor, the show Britney Spears left after one season. X-Factor has confirmed that Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubino will sit beside Demi Lovato and Simon Cowell next season, so it looks like the plan is to not cast such iconic names this time around. We'll see if Idol follows that same path!
