The judging panel at American Idol is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're going to get.
After spending $26 million to get Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj at the same table, producers for the show may cut them loose and attempt to throw more money at the situation. A source at Fox claims that it is "absolutely certain" next season will contain "definitely no Mariah."
Not only is the show also growing weary of Nicki, but they may be getting tired of Keith Urban and Randy Jackson as well! The source told E! Online that Idol is trying to create a major jolt of energy for next season and will look at going "back to the drawing board and a new panel for next season." In other words, all four judges may be getting the boot in just a couple of weeks.
There has even been consideration of bringing back the original threesome of Randy, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul if The X Factor were ever to be cancelled, but the source acknowleged that possibility is "way, way in the future."
Harry Connick Jr. is the only name to be tossed around as a possible replacement for next season so far, but he set the record straight yesterday on Ellen and said that nobody has approached him yet.
"I've done it twice and I had so much fun, but they haven't said, 'Do you want to be a judge?'" he said. "Like the security people and a couple of the interns say, 'Oh, you would be a good judge.' I'm like, 'Oh, well, thank you.' But I haven't had an actual talk."
Ratings for the show continue to plummet, dropping 22 percent compared to last season. Many cite the ongoing feud between Mariah and Nicki as turning away viewers from the show and alienating middle America.
Do you think there should be a whole new judging panel for next season?
