Tom Hardy isn’t exactly the first guy to come to mind when we think of someone who could play Elton John, but that’s who the makers of Rocketman are courting for the role. The Dark Knight Rises star, who is primarily known for uber-masculine (and often shirtless) roles in films like Warrior and Lawless, would certainly be an intriguing choice to play the eccentric and colorful musician...
Explained as a "biographical musical fantasy that weaves together the life of Sir Elton John and his music," Rocketman will be directed by first-time filmmaker Michael Gracey, who also has a P.T. Barnum biopic in the works. It’s a good time for buzz on a film about a flamboyant gay musician, since Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra just gave HBO its best TV movie numbers in almost a decade, and people are raving about Michael Douglas’ performance.

Rocketman would be another opportunity to see a colorful figure from the 70s performing in outrageous costumes (and probably getting it on with a male co-star or two). Of course, a big difference between Elton and Liberace is that Liberace was never open about his sexuality when he was alive (not to mention how different their music and fan bases are).
Though Tom is mainly known for tough-guy roles, his acting chops give us reason enough to believe that he’d be interesting tackling something a little more vibrant. (Though he never struck us as a musical type.) His next role certainly doesn’t scream “Elton John” ― he’s playing Mad Max in the reboot of the decades-old Mel Gibson franchise.
