Jay-Z is opening up about his dark past, how he landed Beyoncé and what Blue Ivy really thinks of his music in the latest issue of Vanity Fair. Spoiler alert: the Blue Ivy bit is just beyond adorable.

These days, Jay is one of the best and classiest in the business but back when he was growing up in the projects in Brooklyn, it was all about getting by, even if that meant doing some dangerous things, such as deal drugs. “Crack was everywhere – it was inescapable. There wasn’t any place you could go for isolation or a break,” he said. “You go in the hallway; [there are] crack heads in the hallway. You look out in the puddles on the curbs – crack vials are littered on the side of the curbs. You could smell it in the hallways, that putrid smell; I can’t explain it, but it’s still in my mind when I think about it.”

While Jay stresses that he only sold crack and never tried it, he did admit that it took him a while to finally feel guilty about his drug dealing past. “In the beginning… I was thinking about surviving. I was thinking about improving my situation. I was thinking about buying clothes,” he explained.

Things brightened up in Jay-Z’s life once he became a successful rapper and pursued his now wife, Beyoncé. Talking about how he had to work to get the girl, he said, “You got to dazzle… wine and dine.” Another happy part of his life is his one-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, who he called his “biggest fan” and full supporter of his album Magna Carta. “She plays a song and she goes, ‘More Daddy, more… Daddy song.’ She’s my biggest fan. If no one bought the Magna Carta, the fact that she loves it so much, it gives me the greatest joy.”

Oh but wait, there’s even more Blue cuteness to include from the interview – she loves Queen Bey’s music too! While Beyoncé may have said that their daughter prefers Jay’s music to hers, her husband thinks otherwise. “That’s not true. She does like her mother’s music – she’s watches [Beyoncé’s concerts] on the computer every night.” No way – us too!
