Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had plenty of people talking – and in tears – during their performance of “Same Love” at Sunday’s Grammys, where 34 couples wed in front of millions of people. And while te duo took home four awards on music’s biggest night, it’s that moment that gives them goose bumps when they think back to it.

Macklemore and Ryan stopped by The Ellen Show to break down how the concept of the couples joining them during their performance came about. Turns out, it wasn’t their idea!

Macklemore and Ryan owe all the credit to the ceremony’s producer, Ken Ehrlich. “His daughter has been a fan for a while and she told him that over the last year a few different times we’ve had proposals on stage that people would email us and be like ‘hey is there any way that I can propose on stage,’ so we’ve done that a few times, and he thought that was a cool idea and it started building and building and it turned to 33 couples,” Ryan explained.

“I got emotional during rehearsal and I got emotional during the performance,” admitted Macklemore.
