It seems like every week there’s someone out there calling Ariana Grande the next Mariah Carey. Seriously, the girl gets compared to the legendary singer on the daily. But after all these months of comparisons, we’ve never really heard from Mariah on what she thinks about it all. Until now.
During a very candid interview with New York City radio station 105.1′s The Breakfast Club, Mariah opened up about a number of topics, including her relationship with Nick Cannon, her unsuccessful stint on American Idol, her feud with Nicki Minaj and, of course, Ariana. Now, while Mariah doesn’t diss the young pop star, she didn’t exactly shower her with compliments either.

“First of all, I’m still young ’cause I discount numbers. Numerically speaking, I stopped counting at 17,” Mariah explained. “But I wish everybody all the best of luck, and if this is the career they choose, I hope they can achieve longevity.” Radio host Charlamagne added his two cents, saying, “Jay-Z always says ‘Don’t compare me to nobody, I’m offended.’” Mariah responded, “Jay-Z always says a lot of things I agree with.” Yikes.
Ariana has always spoke highly of Mariah whenever she’s confronted with comparisons, saying, “She’s an inspiration — she’s the greatest female vocalist, so [the comparison] was definitely a compliment,” she said. “Mariah and Whitney Houston were my goddesses growing up.” How about we stop the comparisons and let Ariana be the next Ariana Grande?
