Alex Preston has definitely been one of our favorites on season 13 of American Idol right from the moment when we first heard him! With his unique voice and talent, it’s obvious that this guy has a place in the music industry.

Chelsea Briggs chatted with Alex backstage after his performance of Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Want To Be” on Tuesday’s show and got the lowdown on his performance, and what he needs to work on in order to move on in the competition.

Putting his own spin on Gavin’s hit song, Alex didn’t exactly receive rave reviews from the judges, especially Jennifer Lopez who didn’t agree with the arrangement he came up with.

“I didn’t want to do the original arrangement because I think when I do a cover – I’m an original artist,” Alex said. “That’s what I do is write songs, that’s what I love to do. So when I do a cover, I like to do my own little twist on it because I’m not good at karaoke or anything. I’m not trying to reenact their voice – I want to do my own voice, and I guess this time it just didn’t work for them and that’s fine.”
