Happy Earth Day to all of our friends out there! This is a super important day to support and promote environmental protection, but it’s not something that should just be celebrated one day. It needs to be celebrated everyday and we need to help! All of our favorite faces from Hollywood are helping the cause, so we are here to highlight their achievements and hopefully you will find your inspiration to help too!
Let’s kick things off with Leonardo DiCaprio. He started the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation to help people become more aware of environmental issues and he even produced and wrote a documentary entitled The 11th Hour, which discusses what we can all do to help.
Edward Norton helped launch the Solar Neighbor Program where people go around Los Angeles and give solar panels to low-income family homes which is AMAZING. He also hosted the hit National Geographic series Strange Days on Planet Earth.
Stella McCartney is helping women become more eco-friendly with her cosmetic line called CARE, which contain only organic ingredients. That does mean no petrochemicals or silicones because we know you were wondering. You can find these products in her stores that are powered by the wind. That’s pretty rad if you ask us.
Brad Pitt has been an advocate for making the world a better place for years and with the help of the Make It Right Foundation he helped rebuild 150 New Orleans homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and all of the materials and technology used were green!
We obivoulsy have to talk about Angelina Jolie now! She is on the board of advisors for the Yéle Haiti Foundation and joined her husband, Brad and Wyclef Jean on his Clean Streets project.
Sting did an amazing thing (we know how to rhyme) by founding the Rainforest Foundation to help protect the world’s rainforests.
We obviously have to talk about George Clooney and how he is a United Nations Messenger of Peace and with this title he’s been able to support dozens of organizations like Save Darfur. He was also a part of the film Syriana that helps raise awareness on our countries dependence of oil. Seriously, you should check out this movie it’s brilliant!
Adrian Greneir is a part of the Planet Green TV Show Alter Eco, which helps celebrities and average citizens live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. He also drives a Prius AND his house in Brooklyn casually has insulation that is made from recycled denim which s so much better than traditional fiberglass insulation.
Mark Ruffalo is a huge advocate for making the world a better place and how the oil and gas industry and an effect on doing the opposite. He also is really against the Keystone XL pipeline, which is an oil pipeline system in Canada and the United States.
The 2011 Greenest International Celebrity of the Year is none other than Gisele Bundchen and she even is on the Rainforest Alliance board of directors!
Sweet, Sweet Meryl Streep. In 1989 she created Mothers and Others, which informs the public about chemicals and toxins that have become in non-organic foods which is super important to know about obviously.
Natalie Portman has done so much for the environment! She is really passionate about factory farming and she made a statement on The Huffington Post stating, “The human cost of factory farming -- both the compromised welfare of slaughterhouse workers and, even more, the environmental effects of the mass production of animals -- is staggering.” She traveled to Rwanda to film the documentary Saving A Species: Gorillas on the Brink. This film follows a set of endangered gorillas and how we as a society can save them. She’s also designed her own vegan shoes and her engagement ring!? Yeah that’s eco-friendly! You go girl!
The lads of Maroon 5 have been giving a helping hand ever since they started. They use biodiesel-powered tour buses, promote recycling at their concert venues and even donate some of their ticket sales to Global Cool, a charity that works with entertainers to help them promote the green movement. They are also super strong supporters of the Environmental Media Association, Kiva and Teen Impact.
The self-proclaimed hippie, Shailene Woodley, does whatever she can to help the Earth. She forages for food in the wild, uses beets as lipstick and really just promotes doing whatever we can to make the world a better place.
Dave Matthews Band knows what’s up with the CO2 that is produced by their tour buses, so they go out to produce better things for the environment. They have funded several projects like the Bama Green Project, which helps plant trees and constructs wind turbines!
Rosario Dawson is a board member for the Environment Media Association and she worked with SodaStream on the ‘Unbottle the World Day’ Campaign, which teaches people about the hazards of water bottles and can products.
Ben Stiller has been a part of numerous charities including the Centre For Environmental Education and Last Chance for Animals.
