Heffalumps and Woozles Meet Hollywood

Posted on 11 April 2008 by Divalicious

“If esteem is what you covet, you’ll find that they love it. Because they guzzle up the thing you prize.”  Ahh … hooray for Hollywood and it’s distorted view of what is beautiful.  Hit the jump to see who’s thin, who’s round, who’s up and who’s down.I’ve always referred to this need in Hollywood to be a certain weight as the Heffalumps and Woozles Syndrome.  You are either a Heffalump (heavy) or a Woozle (thin).  No room for poor Winnie the Pooh (normal).  So, what does Hollywood look like today?Let’s start by talking about the boys.  When I polled my friends online, I asked them to name off the first male actor that comes to mind. The results were as follows:Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Seth Rogan, George Clooney, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, John Travolta, Owen Wilson, Tom Hanks, Will Smith and Johnny Depp.  These are the men that are on the top of everyone’s radar.  Their looks, ages, and physique vary greatly.  If we were to make a collage of these heavy hitters in Hollywood, it would look a bit like this:celebrity male bodiesFor the most part, male celebrities can get away with having a less than appealing body and attractive face if they have status, humor, or charm.  You’ll notice that in 2007 who we saw on movie posters were stars like Seth Rogan grinning back.  The #1 box office hits of last year were filled with male celebrities who’s weight/image is rarely taken into question.  Even when hotties like Brad Pitt and Owen Wilson decide not to shave, or when John Travolta and Tom Hanks begin to show their age, they are rarely brought into the public eye and torn apart for a change in their appearance. Now… the ladies. A poll of my friends returned the following ladies - Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie.Their collage might look something like this:celeb female bodiesEvery one of the women above is thin.  I would say Scarlett is leaning more toward normal than the other 4, however, she is still far below “average” size. So, where are the big girls? They are comic reliefs and, if they exist, are almost 90% minority races.  This is because, culturally speaking, being big boned or heafty is accepted in nearly every demographic but Caucasian.Back in the golden age of Hollywood being curvy was sexy.  Now it seems that not eating and being anorexic is the way to go!  I don’t see it going anywhere in the next few years either. Look at the diet of Bratz dolls we are feeding our young girls or the fact that girls see Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, and Britney Spears every day of their lives as role models.Do you see Hollywood changing and starting to accept normal looking girls? Should celebrities be expected to maintain a certain look?A diet of laxatives, a finger, or starvation? OMG, that’s Hawt…… right?

I honestly don’t think those girls are nearly as beautiful as Salma Hayek. I’m not a big girl… but I would much rather have curves than for people to stare at my “jutting” ribs. Don’t get me wrong, those girls can act (with the exception of Jessica Alba… she’s just painful to watch!!)… but there is pressure to be thin.
