Mad Men is back, and we’re not mad about it. In fact, we’re delighted! The multi-Emmy-winning drama has remained one of the best shows on TV ― ever, not just currently ― for five seasons straight now, without a single narrative misstep or shark-jump. (No musical episodes or adopted orphans… yet!)

Want to know what’ll happen when the sixth season premieres on Sunday? Well, so do we! And since we wouldn’t want to dig up any actual spoilers, we’re basing our Season Six predictions on the characters’ past behavior. Certain things have tended to happen throughout the series time and time again, so we’ve come up with some very educated guesses as to what we’ll see go down this year…

Many of our favorite actors become forever linked to an iconic role ― especially when it’s a television show, and we see them as that character for years on end. How could there be a Tony Soprano without James Gandolfini, or a Buffy The Vampire Slayer without Sarah Michelle Gellar? (We’re still pretending the Kristy Swanson movie never happened.)

But of course, few TV characters are created with the actor who ends up playing them in mind. Many shows go through an exhaustive casting process to find just the right fit ― and some of the actors who almost get cast are pretty famous in their own right. A recently-leaked sign-in sheet for The Office revealed that familiar faces like Hamish Linklater and Adam Scott were considered for the role of Jim (ultimately going to John Krasinski, of course, making him a star), while Paul Giamatti was the first choice for the role that went to Steve Carell.

From big stars who turned down TV projects that ended up being a huge deal to then-unknowns who went on to find fame in future shows, here are TV's most alarming casting near-misses from some of our favorite shows to ever grace the small screen!

Out of all the major upsets that took place at the 2012 Emmys, the biggest shock of the night was perennial Emmy darling Mad Men leaving empty handed this year!

The AMC hit was nominated for nine Emmys this year, more than they had ever been nominated for in a single year since the show first aired. But whether it was in writing, directing or acting, Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, and the rest of the cast and crew came up short in every category. They even lost the Outstanding Drama Series category to Homeland, an area they had faithfully won for the last four years running!
