Entertainment news has been dominated by one thing and one thing only this week ― the upfronts! As series are wrapping up in time for summer during May, networks start looking ahead at fall and revealing which shows they’re picking up for next season’s schedule.

Naturally, it’s a mixed bag ― a few of these shows we can’t wait to get our hands on, while some already seem destined for cancellation. This year’s crop of new shows brings Anna Faris and Rebel Wilson their own sitcoms, has Andy Samberg playing a cop (!), introduces a Vampire Diaries spin-off, and marks the TV return of Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s two biggest factors ― Sarah Michelle Gellar and Joss Whedon.

Many of our favorite actors become forever linked to an iconic role ― especially when it’s a television show, and we see them as that character for years on end. How could there be a Tony Soprano without James Gandolfini, or a Buffy The Vampire Slayer without Sarah Michelle Gellar? (We’re still pretending the Kristy Swanson movie never happened.)

But of course, few TV characters are created with the actor who ends up playing them in mind. Many shows go through an exhaustive casting process to find just the right fit ― and some of the actors who almost get cast are pretty famous in their own right. A recently-leaked sign-in sheet for The Office revealed that familiar faces like Hamish Linklater and Adam Scott were considered for the role of Jim (ultimately going to John Krasinski, of course, making him a star), while Paul Giamatti was the first choice for the role that went to Steve Carell.

From big stars who turned down TV projects that ended up being a huge deal to then-unknowns who went on to find fame in future shows, here are TV's most alarming casting near-misses from some of our favorite shows to ever grace the small screen!

If your answer is “yes,” then you are crazy. It’s not even spring, silly! And the fall lineup is still far from determined.

But here at Hollywire we like to think ahead, and there’s all kinds of news swirling about who’s starring in which pilots, giving us some idea of what we might see on TV when the biggest shows of the year land come September. Of course, every network orders more pilots than they can actually air, so a few of these will definitely be getting the axe... while there's basically no way a TV spinoff of last year's biggest movie from one of the biggest names in TV won't be hitting the small screen.
