20 Romantic Movie Quotes

This Valentine's Day will be the most romantic one ever...well, hopefully, anyways.  Guys, to increase your chances of impressing your lady, memorize some of these great lines from leading men throughout the years.  Ladies, if your man is somewhat inarticulate, you can watch these movies together and just pretend that he's saying them to you--or vice versa.

Pride and Prejudice

Though all versions of Pride and Prejudice are fantastic, this particular quote is from the 2005 version.  Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet meet in a field at daybreak in one of the most humble and lovely proposals.

Mr. Darcy: You must know... surely, you must know it was all for you. You are too generous to trifle with me. I believe you spoke with my aunt last night, and it has taught me to hope as I'd scarcely allowed myself before. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.

Twilight

Though it is still a relatively new movie, Twilight began a phenomenon of girls wishing to find vampiric love, and maybe even become a vampire to live with their eternally young love.  Bella and Edward embody the soul of forbidden love.

Edward: That's what you dream about? Being a monster?

Bella: I dream about being with you forever.

Titanic

As the ultimate scene in one of the ultimate romance stories, Jack's sacrifice to keep Rose alive made it impossible to watch this movie without bawling.  He does all he can to ensure that she will live, demonstrating his incredible love.

Jack Dawson: Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me... it brought me to you. And I'm thankful for that, Rose. I'm thankful. You must do me this honor. You must promise me that you'll survive. That you won't give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.
Rose DeWitt Bukater: I promise.
Jack Dawson: Never let go.
Rose DeWitt Bukater: I'll never let go, Jack. I'll never let go.
10 Things I Hate About You

In the movie that helped bring household recognition to Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles as stubborn and man-hating Kat confesses her love for the bad-boy by creating a list of all the ways she "hates" him; her stubbornness finally caving to affection.

Kat: I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car, I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big, dumb combat boots and the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick — It even makes me rhyme.
I hate the way you're always right. I hate it when you lie.
I hate it when you make me laugh — Even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it that you're not around. And the fact that you don't call.
But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you — Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.

When Harry Met Sally

The movie that had everyone asking, "Can men and women ever be just friends?", another sort of odd list is made by Harry to tell Sally all the odd things about her that he loves.  Take a tip, boys; be unique when declaring your love.

Harry: How about this way? I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.

Love Actually

There are few things more enchanting than a guy that learns the language of the girl he loves (and has been previously unable to communicate with save hand gestures), flies to her home country, and proposes in front of everyone she knows (as well as quite a few that she doesn't).  Plus, there is something so charming about Collin Firth stumbling over a foreign language.

Jamie: (in Portuguese) Beautiful Aurelia, I've come here with a view of asking you to marriage me. I know I seems an insane person - because I hardly knows you - but sometimes things are so transparency, they don't need evidential proof. And I will inhabit here, or you can inhabit with me in England.

Sleepless in Seattle

Even though he's talking about his deceased wife on a radio show, Tom Hank's character Sam is still able to win over Meg Ryan as Annie--which means that it has to be a pretty fantastic line.

Doctor Fieldstone: Tell me what was so special about your wife?

Sam: Well, how long is your program? Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were suppose to be together... and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home... only to no home I'd ever known... I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like... magic.

The Village

Let's be honest; sometimes girls can drive their guys a little crazy with all the talking; especially if the guy is a bit reserved himself.  However, this part from The Village seems to be the best way to let a girl know how you feel about her chatter, while also demonstrating your undying devotion to her.

Ivy Walker: When we are married, will you dance with me? I find dancing very agreeable. Why can you not say what is in your head?
Lucius Hunt: Why can you not stop saying what is in yours? Why must you lead, when I want to lead? If I want to dance I will ask you to dance. If I want to speak I will open my mouth and speak. Everyone is forever plaguing me to speak further. Why? What good is it to tell you you are in my every thought from the time I wake? What good can come from my saying that I sometimes cannot think clearly or do my work properly? What gain can rise of my telling you the only time I feel fear as others do is when I think of you in harm? That is why I am on this porch, Ivy Walker. I fear for your safety before all others. And yes, I will dance with you on our wedding night.
Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!

When a guy does all he can to try and win the affections of the girl he loves away from a movie star, and then she ends up being the one to win him over all over again--it just shows that there is something to be said for perseverance.

Rosalee: You have five smiles Pete. One when you think someone an idiot. One when you think someone's REALLY an idiot. One when you're singing to Barry White. One when you're getting all dressed up. And one when you're looking at me.

Gone with the Wind

As one of the most volatile on-screen couples, Scarlett and Rhett set the tone for sexual tension.  But boys, if you are tempted to tell your girl something along the lines of "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn"; we would urge you to go with a line somewhat sexier and a bit softer on the ego:

Scarlett: Well, I won't kiss you for it either.
Rhett[just when she's ready for a kiss} Open your eyes and look at me. No, I don't think I will kiss you - although you need kissing badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.

The Princess Diaries

This modern fairy-tale is goofy and light-hearted, but seeing a princess come into her own while finding true love is one of the most classic and beautiful tales that gets told.

Michael: Why me?
Mia: Because you saw me when I was invisible.
The Princess Bride

A cult classic; The Princess Bride is funny, dramatic, and completely adorable.  We also like the idea that their is a guy romantic enough to "come back from the dead" to rekindle love.

Westley: I told you I would always come for you. Why didn't you wait for me?
Buttercup: Well... you were dead.
Westley: Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.
Buttercup: I will never doubt again.
Westley: There will never be a need.
Romeo and Juliet

For the most classic of tragic love stories, nothing really needs to be said.

Juliet: I gave thee mine before thou didst request it:
And yet I would it were to give again.
Romeo: Wouldst thou withdraw it? for what purpose, love?
Juliet: But to be frank, and give it thee again.
And yet I wish but for the thing I have;
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.

Casablanca

While we all know that Rick was dying to stay with Ilsa, the fact that he let her go so that her life would be better is incredibly noble.  And if you will only have one memory to remember your former lover by, having it in Paris is probably the best way to go.

Rick: If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.
Ilsa: But what about us?
Rick: We'll always have Paris. We didn't have it before...we'd...we'd lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night.
Ilsa: When I said I would never leave you...
Rick: And you never will. But I've got a job to do, too. Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that. Here's looking at you, kid.
The Notebook

The Notebook is all about love that endures through the ages; even when it is a struggle and seems impossible.  And a man that believes that your love can create a miracle--hold on to him!

Young Allie: So what?
Young Noah: So it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard. And we're gonna have to work at this every day. But I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day. Can you do something for me? Please? Will you just picture your life for me? Thirty years from now? Forty years from now? What's it look like? If it's with that guy, go. Go! I lost you once. I think I can do it again if I thought that's what you really wanted. But don't you take the easy way out.
Allie: Do you think our love can create miracles?
Duke: I do.
Roman Holiday

Even though this story ends with two people recognizing that the circumstances of their lives prevent them from being together, Princess Ann's subtle way of acknowledging her wonderful time in Rome with Joe is a lovely and heartwrenching nod to unrequited love.

Reporter: Which of the cities visited did Your Highness enjoy the most?
General Provno: [prompting] Each, in its own way...
Princess Ann: Each, in its own way, was unforgettable. It would be difficult to - Rome! By all means, Rome. I will cherish my visit here in memory as long as I live.
Bridget Jones' Diary

Everyone has faults, but not everyone points them out so blatantly as Mark Darcy does in Bridget Jones' Diary.  Still, his speech is redemptive because he not only recognizes his own faults, but he accepts her just the way she is.

Mark: I don't think you're an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother's pretty interesting. And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um, you tend to let whatever's in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences. I realize that when I met you at the Turkey Curry Buffet I was unforgiveably rude... and wearing a reindeer jumper. That my mother had given me the day before. But the thing is, um, what I'm trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you. Very much.
Bridget: Apart from the smoking and the drinking and the verbal diarrhoea...
Mark: No, I mean I like you very much. Just as you are.
Juno

Teen love is exhilarating, hopeful, and incredibly confusing--especially if you get knocked up before you realize you are in love.  But Juno articulates the all-encompassing feelings of love the best way she knows how--in a quirky, casual way.

Juno: I think I'm in love with you.
Paulie: You mean as friends?
Juno: No, I mean, like, for real. 'Cause you're, like, the coolest person I've ever met — and you don't even have to try, you know...
Paulie: I try really hard, actually.
Paulie: Can we make out now?
Juno: Yeah.
Ever After

Ever After is an incredible re-imagination of the fairy tale of Cinderella, because it is not just about a princess waiting for her prince to rescue her, but about a girl who is willing to stand up and speak for herself.  And the best thing is that Danielle finds a man who is incredibly attracted to those traits.

Danielle: Is something wrong?
Henry: In all my years of study, not one tutor ever demonstrated the passion you have shown me in the last two days. You have more conviction in one memory than I have... in my entire being.
Sweet Home Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama is about coming home and realizing that you may be the same person you were before you left--and it doesn't have to be a bad thing.  It's also about reuniting a love that the characters thought had died long ago, but that was meant to be even from the time they were kids.

Melanie: What do you want to marry me for anyhow?
Jake: So I can kiss you anytime I want.
And a little extra...
In case you are single this Valentine's Day, take a cue from the character Billy Mack from Love Actually, who realized sometimes the people you love most in life are your friends; the ones who have been there for you in success and failure and make no demands from you other than that you are there for them too.

Billy Mack: I realized that Christmas is the time to be with the people you love.
Joe: Right.
Billy Mack: And I realized that as dire chance and fateful cockup would have it, here I am, mid 50s, and without knowing it I've gone and spent most of my adult life with a chubby employee. And much as it grieves me to say it, it might be that the people I love is, in fact... you.
[pause]
Joe: Well, this is a surprise.
Billy Mack: Yeah...
Joe: Ten minutes at Elton John's and you're as gay as a maypole.
So here they are, friends--go get romantic this Valentine's Day!  Or if you are single, let your friends know how much you appreciate them!  This is the day of love, and love of all kinds should be celebrated.
