The Marvel Comics adaptation, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the Iron Man himself, hauled in $100.7 million over opening weekend and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, the second-best premiere ever for a non-sequel, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The film also scored overseas with $96.7 million in 57 countries where it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million.

But the good always comes with the bad. This weekend was down nearly 13% from the same weekend in 2007, when “Spider-Man 3” kicked off the summer with $151.1 weekend gross, the highest on record, according to Media by Numbers.

I guess it could be worse, if I were the studios and movie execs I would take what I can get and be happy with it. Plus, Iron Man is the first title out of the gate produced by Marvel, and it will be followed later this summer by The Hulk, which Universal is releasing.

Teenage boys everywhere– rejoice I say, rejoice!

With so many rave reviews from many critics already, Iron Man features Downey as billionaire arms designer Tony Stark, who builds a high-tech suit and becomes a superhero. He changes his self-absorbed ways after he’s taken captive and sees firsthand the devastation his weapons cause.

This film is directed by Jon Favreau, and also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard. But I must say I was extremely pleased with Robert Downey Jr. and his performance in Iron Man. He really needed a strong comeback movie and I’m sure this will suffice.
