Eminem's Relapse Scores This Years Biggest Chart Debut
Eminem's new album Relapse debuted on the top of the Billboard chart yesterday selling 608,000 albums. That is this years top album Billboard Topper with U2 at number two selling 484,000 in March. Collectively, Eminem's six albums have sold 34 million in the U.S., making him the biggest selling hip-hop act in the SoundScan era (1991-present).These huge numbers still surprise me. I can't believe that many people are still buying CDs. I mean I still do, I'm kinda old fashioned that way.
I love that Slim Shady is back. His arrival has been long awaited. A lot of people were concerned that Em was going to come back. It's been five long years since he released Encore. I think that with him taking time off to straighten his life out a bit and really getting into that artistic state of mind really helped him out.
Best Buy manager Jonathan Hart told Music Mix, "People weren't sure if this guy was ever going to be back. It's generated hype because of that."
Have any of you heard the album? What do you think?
Fuse TV vice president David Weier echoes this thought: "I often criticize the record business for rushing records out too soon. You've got to let people miss you. That's exactly what he did this time: He stepped out of the light, away from the media, away from the attention, [and] let people wonder."
