Hollywire's Exclusive Interview with New Dance Music Sensation Erika Jayne!
Fantasy, love and escape. Those are three words up and coming dance music sensation Erika Jayne uses to describe her new album, Pretty Mess which drops August 11th. If you haven't heard of Erika Jayne yet, trust me, you will. She has been compared to Madonna at the point in Madonna's career when she recorded her Erotica album, as well as to Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue. She also has already had two No. 1 Billboard Dance Radio hit singles, Rollercoaster and Stars, and with her album about to drop in a few months, we have no doubt that you will see her at the top of the charts again in the near future. Much like Madonna and Lady Gaga, Erika has a distinct sense of style, which she describes as "hollywood glamour meets S&M chic." She says that as a musical artist, "fashion is part of the whole persona, your costumes or your fashion influence who you are and what you say." And while most women in the music industry often feel enormous pressure to look and perform a certain way, Erika feels the opposite. She says, "I feel like I have enormous freedom in that area, I like what I do and I like who I am and I think that comes with a certain amount of experience. The trick to being successful is self-confidence, and knowing who you are."
When asked about Myspace and it's effectiveness in the music industry, Erika praised the networking site saying, "Myspace is great because you can deliver so much content directly to fans and I think it's very important. It's nice because it kind of levels the playing field for the independent artists. Look at 'Twitter Girl!'" She is of course referencing actor and friend of Hollywire Michael Copon's new hit song, "Twitter Girl," which is currently getting a lot of attention on the web. Interestingly enough Erika and Michael actually know eachother after he made a cameo in her first music video, "Give You Everything."
Just from talking to Erika you can tell that she is one of those artists who really cares about her work and
tries to remain unaffected by the Hollywood lifestyle. She says, "the most important thing is to remain happy and do performances. As long as I'm creating, I'm happy." Erika says her music is supposed to be fun, lighthearted, and provide a little bit of an escape for anyone who hears it. Erika says that she wants anyone who listens to her music to know, "I set out to make a fun record and to have a good time and when you listen to the songs I hope you can take a little trip away from life, enjoy yourself and kick up your heels!"
