Owl City, Paper Route and Lights Take Over LA's Club Nokia

This weekend, I went to see Owl City at his sold out show at Club Nokia, which is a performance I've been waiting to see for almost an entire YEAR.

Owl City had two great up-and-coming artists open for him.  First to perform was Paper Route, an indie-electro rock band from Nashville, Tennessee.  I didn't expect much at first from what I thought was a cookie cutter rock band made up of four cute guys, but they won over an entire audience who wasn't even there to see them perform in the first place!

Second up was Lights, an adorable solo electro-pop artist whose song "Saviour" you've probably heard before without realizing it.  I was really impressed by her performance as well--her voice is whimsical yet solid.  She also scored major cool points with the audience when she busted out a keytar!

Finally Owl City made his grand entrance, and while at first I was really impressed by the live mini-orchestra he had on stage and and flashing lights, I eventually got frustrated with his performance.  Don't get me wrong, Adam's voice was on point and he clearly put his emotions behind his lyrics, but his set list was all wrong.  He started out with a few uptempo songs like "The Bird and the Worm," which had me singing along like an excited 14-year-old, but after about the sixth song, I grew tired of the slow, emo songs that eventually ran together, and by the looks of it, it seemed the audience shared my sentiment.  Not a hand in the air or much movement in the crowd at all, except for some head nodding.  I just wanted to hear one more of his upbeat songs to break the lethargy and it took close to the end of the show to do that.

Perhaps Owl City over the upbeat sounds of Ocean Eyes and wants to reinvent himself to be a more mature, brooding indie-rock artist .  I really hope not because Owl City has got true talent behind his awkward exterior.

No, don't be sad, Adam... here's your hit that everyone loves to cheer you up!
