Rants & Raves

Oh my friends...how I have missed you.  But even more, I have missed ranting and raving (though I have done it privately plenty of times lately; as I recently went through midterms).  So here's another set of things to get you thinking about what you love and hate in the news.

Raves!

Lady Gaga is Shy

[caption id="attachment_32272" align="aligncenter" width="199" caption=""Don't let the unitard fool you! Really, I'm so shy around guys!""]"Don't let the unitard fool you! Really, I'm so shy around guys!"[/caption] Sometimes I'm pretty annoyed with the stuff that Lady Gaga does (umm...that hair bow?  Saying that "Poker Face" is about bisexuality when there is absolutely no reference to anything that can be tied to it in the lyrics?)--but she recently admitted that she is terrible with the menfolk, saying, "...I have no confidence when it comes to men. Men are a disaster area for me."  Omigosh!  Lady Gaga is actually normal in one way!  Of course, she goes on to say, “It’s so weird because I believe I am super sexy. I believe I am incredible, but I have absolutely no luck with boyfriends.”  Well, she might be shy, but she's not humble.  Who cares!  We need more women with confidence out there...and

Connie Culp:

The Face of the First U.S. Face Transplant Recipient

This is truly incredible.  This brave woman was the first person in the U.S. to receive a face transplant, and now she is showing the world (I saw this on an episode of Grey's Anatomy once--but seeing it on a real person is remarkable).  Connie Culp's face became disfigured after her husband shot her in the face, leaving her noseless and completely unrecognizable.  Connie had to endure not only that tragedy, but also the comments in public: once, a child turned to her mother after seeing Connie and said she was a monster; Connie took it in stride and showed the girl her license picture and what she used to look like.  Now, she speaks out about how she told her husband she forgives him and how she wants to help other people with disfigurement.  This truly is an amazingly brave and inspiring woman.

May 6th: International No Dieting Day

Okay, ladies!  It's time to put the carrot sticks down and pick up a Big Mac, because May 6th is the International No Dieting Day!  This day celebrates that there is no "right" body type, and that there is nothing funny about discrimination based on weight.  It's a day about loving your body the way it is, which doesn't mean starving yourself or eating all the junk food you can order from the dollar menu--it means being healthy and loving yourself as you are.  Many celebrities embrace the stick thin look, but there is nothing cute about looking half-starved and drug-addled.  Take a cue from girls with curves like Scarlett Johannsen, America Ferrara, and Kim Kardashian.  Go ahead, indulge for a day--having too rigid a diet is never fun.

Rants!

Swine Flu Frenzy

[caption id="attachment_32271" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption=""I'll huff and I'll puff, but I won't pass the flu to you.""][/caption] This obsession with swine flu is completely ridiculous.  Not only is it not "threat" of swine flu completely overhyped, but it's making people act down-right crazy.  In Egypt, over-zealous  types slaughtered around 350,000 pigs--when the real kicker is that swine flu can't be passed from pigs to people.  And the fact is that swine flu is statistically not as deadly as the regular flu--because even though a hundred or so people have died from the swine strain, thousands of people die each year from the regular flu.  So take off your face masks (because after a few hours, your breathing will make the mask moist, rendering it ineffective anyways) and eat your bacon--swine flu is more of a media frenzy then an epidemic.

Madonna's Met Costume

[caption id="attachment_32270" align="aligncenter" width="159" caption="As the French would say...Quoi-TF????"][/caption]

The Met had their annual costume gala that allows celebrities to flaunt their sophistication and style, and Madonna chose the event to showcase the fact that she still has a youthful style--and by youthful style, I mean the style of a rebellious teenage who is interested in ComiCon and dabbles in the occult (and to clarify: 'youthful style' was not a direct reference to her man Jesus--the model, not the Savior--but it can probably be taken as such anyways).  But Madonna, seriously--you are super fit and still hot; why wear an outfit that clearly does not capitalize on those traits?  I know you are cutting edge, but leave the bows for the children (and Lady Gaga) and the boots for the street walkers.   Ok, my little lovely friends, I hope you have enjoyed planning your next meal for No Diet Day (remember, pork's OK!) and thinking about Lady Gaga as a dating disaster.  And don't worry too much about Madonna--she's spunky enough to bounce back from this fashion disaster.  Til next time!
