For months now, we have read the headlines regarding the imprisonment of American Journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee. As a matter of fact, back in June of this year at the Step Up Women’s Network Inspiration Awards, I got to hear Laura Ling’s famous sister Lisa Ling, speak to a crowd of women regarding her family’s ordeal.

The Ling sisters.
With their mother in the audience, Lisa Ling described the anxiety and stress of her sisters impending trial in North Korea. Then, the time had come, the two journalists were sentenced to a labor camp and the world watched hopelessly. Many including myself wondered, how did this happen? What was the story behind these two courageous journalists who had been traveling various parts of the world covering news from all different angles?
I began to research and found out that both Laura and Euna were journalists for Current TV. While I was horrified that these were the circumstances under which I discovered Current TV, I was pleased to come across the website and learned more about the networks mission.

According to their site, “Current is a new breed of cross-platform media company that works with its young adult audience to create and distribute content that informs, enriches and inspires. We believe media should be a two-way conversation and our fully integrated broadcast and online platforms make that possible. Current TV and Current.com work together to connect young adults with what’s going on in their world through a unique blend of citizen journalism and viewer participation, offering programming and content that’s authentic, often surprising and consistently compelling. Our unique approach gives us exceptional results: more than one third of the programming on Current TV comes from viewers. Current’s award-winning programming ranges from the hottest trends in technology, fashion and music, to pressing issues such as the environment, finance and politics.”
After reading that, it’s no wonder that Laura Ling and Euna Lee were in China filming refugees along the border.
