Nelson chose April 22 for Earth Day because he wanted to maximize participation from college students.  He narrowed the date down to the week of April 19-25 because it wasn’t during spring breaks or college exams and there weren’t any religious holidays that week.  Nelson then chose Wednesday April 22nd because students would be in class and there was a lower chance of other events because it was the middle of the week
