The Coen Brothers Leave No Movie Star Unkilled! ‘Burn After Reading’ Review

Posted on 17 September 2008 by Michael DeZubiria

Wow, the Coen’s are really swinging for the fences with the profanity and the grisly celebrity deaths in Burn After Reading. One of the strange byproducts of their comedy style is that they are among the few filmmakers that can put the f-word in nearly every single line in the entire movie and still keep it funny. I have a theory that it remains funny because, given the sheer weirdness of their stories, when one character after another repeatedly exclaims, “What the f—-?” we’re quite often pondering the same question.

Burn After Reading is an actor’s film, which is one of my recent favorite styles. Some movies are powered by special effects or violence or action or nudity or basic, unfiltered star power, but the actor’s film is something entirely different. It’s a film where every role is played by a well-known actor and their performances are so taylor-made and so spot-on that they almost overshadow the story itself. Some of the better recent examples are movies like Closer and Sideways. Here, it’s like the Coen’s took a series of actors that they wanted to put in a movie and built a story around characters that would fit each of them perfectly.

The movie is centered around a tiny, accidental occurrence that starts a massive sandstorm of chaos for a handful of very, very different people. John Malkovich plays a CIA official named Osborne Cox who is suffering from some kind of mysterious professional persecution when one day his secretary leaves a CD of his work files at the gym, where it is discovered by the janitor and incredulously analyzed by the peculiar staff.

Chad and Linda enjoy a life-altering moment.

Brad Pitt is Chad Feldheimer, a gum-chewing, mentally dim personal trainer at Hardbodies Gym, who “masterminds” a scheme to blackmail Osborne Cox for the lost CD, which he believes to be full of top secret national security information. Like the Coen’s with the whole movie, Pitt has a blast with the character, almost as if the whole thing is just a good time for him. Francis MacDormand plays Linda Litzke, one of Chad’s co-workers who is struggling with her body and her social life. Due in no small part to her own staggering insecurities, she has been effectively squeezed out of society in terms of romance. In a surprising moment of frankness, she visits a plastic surgeon inquiring about several cosmetic procedures. “I’d get laughed out of Hollywood with this body!” She exclaims.

George Clooney plays Harry Pfarrer who, like Linda, is desperately looking for love and screwing up left and right. He’s in an adulterous relationship with Tilda Swinton’s Katie Cox who, you might notice, shares a last name with the CIA official with the lost data CD. She’s a vicious, overbearing wench, but also one of the only characters in the movie who understands their surroundings.

Okay, so let me see if I can remember this right. Osborne and Katie Cox are married, but Katie is having an affair with Harry, who is obedient of her demands but a little overwhelmed. Harry meets Linda soon before she and Chad come across the CD and hit it off pretty well (he brings her into his basement and shows her a device of his own creation, and when she is thrilled at the sight of it, we know they’re perfect for each other), neither realizing how powerfully the shady elements of their lives are about to collide. As David Rasche’s CIA agent notes, “Everyone seems to be sleeping with everyone else.” Oh, what a tangled web we weave…

Harry - "What the f---?!?"

If you’re confused, don’t worry, you’re supposed to be. The plot of Burn After Reading is a distant backdrop to the sheer pleasure of watching these wacky characters bounce off each other. Most notably, the dialogue in the movie is one of it’s best qualities. This might sound belittling, but for those of you who don’t know, believable dialogue is one of the most difficult things to accomplish in filmmaking (or writing). It’s amazing how something that looks flawless on paper just doesn’t come out right on the screen, and equally amazing how often the discrepancy is ignored and thrown into the final cut. Not in this movie, man. Simple conversation is done so perfectly here that it takes a few minutes to realize that the content is total insanity.

In true Coen brothers form, the movie blends genres so effectively that it’s difficult to say if it’s a comedy that plays like an espionage thriller (and gets a little too violent once or twice) or a Hitchcockian political thriller that just happens to be hilarious. If it’s about anything, it’s about what would happen if your typical, low-IQ paranoiac really was being followed by the CIA or assassins or top secret government spies or whatever.

It’s such a weird combination of highly trained government operatives, overbearing wives, and average morons that it’s difficult to believe it’s all written for the screen. The Coen brothers are some of the only people working in Hollywood these days talented to come up with some fiction that must surely be stranger than truth.

And by the way, this guy's 45 years old. What the hell.

George Clooney and Sarah Larson Break it Off

Posted on 28 May 2008 by ksouthall

George Clooney and Sarah Larson

According to In Touch Weekly, gorgeous George Clooney has split from Sarah Larson, a former cocktail waitress from Las Vegas.

According to a friend of Sarah’s, Clooney recently moved out of his LA home while the 29-year-old Larson removed her belongings. This doesn’t really come as a surprise as Clooney has always flaunted his perpetual bachelor ways, and In Touch previously reported that George and Sarah struggled to make their relationship work because of their different backgrounds.

George is relieved to be single again,” an insider tells the mag. “He thinks Sarah is sweet and that is why it was so hard to break up with her. The truth is they had little in common and he just doesn’t want to be tied down,” explains the insider. George’s rep tells In Touch: “I can only confirm that we have never commented on George’s personal life.”

Hmmmmm, sounds like they might have really split up! The two were together for about a year, which is forever in Hollywood terms, much less George Clooney terms. A collective sigh can be heard by housewives across the nation, George is back on the market!

George Clooney Gives Back

Posted on 25 May 2008 by CeCe

I always knew George Clooney was a nice guy.  But even I didn’t expect him to be this nice!

The Oscar winner is donating his football uniform from the recent box office flop flick Leatherheads to a museum in Kentucky dedicated to his late aunt, songstress Rosemary Clooney.

George Clooney Gives Back

Curators of the Rosemary Clooney House Museum in Augusta, Kentucky had originally requested just the actor’s helmet.  To their surprise, the Lexington native offered to donate his entire outfit—cleats and all.

The new display opens June 7th.  Curator Steve Henry told the local Ledger Independent he would like to add at least one costume from all of Clooney’s new films.

I think that’s a large goal for this small museum.  But they already have the new Duluth Bulldogs uniform and the set of ER scrubs so that’s a start.

I wouldn’t put it past Clooney to keep on donating to this museum.  You never know- George’s generosity could lead him to donate a lot more in the future.

Sarah Larson on the Cover of Bazaar Magazine

Posted on 24 May 2008 by Loretta

rom cocktail waitress to supermodel, George Clooney’s infamous girlfriend Sarah Larson is on the cover of the June 2008 issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

Here is a preview of Larson’s interview with Bazaar;

Bazaar: On first meeting George about four years ago while working at a Las Vegas resort, when she was attached to someone else.

Larson: We were hanging out and dancing and being goofballs. Nothing crazy, we talked, thats it.

Bazaar: On things getting serious in June 2007 when they ran into each other at the premiere of Ocean’s Thirteen.

Larson: I got texts, and we just started talking. George is funny and sweet, and he’s good to be around. I see him as a normal person, like anyone else. He just happens to have a well-known face.

That is really sweet of Larson to say that she doesn’t just like George because he is famous. Yeah right, I bet she wouldn’t even give a normal 47 year old man the time of day. The only reason she is famous is because of George Clooney. It just goes to show that its not what you know, its who you know. Here are some pictures of modeling jobs you can get from dating George Clooney.

George Clooney Receives Threats

Posted on 06 April 2008 by Loretta

George-Clooney George Clooney and girlfriend Sarah Larson may have reason to fear for their safety. George Clooney received a threatening phone call earlier this week from an unidentified man. The man called Clooney saying, “Dude, your friends asked me to give you a message - dump the B**** before your sorry.” At first, Clooney thought that his friends were playing a joke on him, then he realized that none of his friends would do that. Clooney contacted a former employee who is also a police officer and had the call traced, but was unable to obtain any information because the caller used a prepaid cell phone. The investigators have hit a dead end and are relying on tips to further their investigation.

George Clooney’s girfriend, Sarah Larson, & her controversial photos

Posted on 28 March 2008 by tammy

Sarah Larson’s controversial photos

I never would figure George Clooney as the type of man to go for a woman that likes to get down and dirty, literally. Pictures have leaked of George’s new younger girlfriend, Sarah Larson, getting wild and frisky. We knew pictures of the mysterious go-go dancer would come out sooner or later.

Not only was Sarah once a go-go dancer in Las Vegas but she also was hired by promoters to “attend special events in sexy outfits and party with her wild girlfriends.”

Star magazine has stumbled upon some pictures Sarah partying in Vegas.

A source close to Sarah says “Sarah looks like she totally belongs, walking down the red carpet on George’s arm,” a source close to her tells Star magazine. “She’s even been described as having a successful runway and print modeling career. But until recently, her modeling career consisted mostly of being paid by promoters for clubs, magazines and radio stations to attend special events in sexy outfits and party with her wild girlfriends! “Sarah is outgoing and fun and loves to drink. She likes to get wasted when she goes out — but hey, that’s what Vegas is all about!”

About her risque pictures?

That’s our Sarah!” claims the source.

“She’s not shy in the slightest. She loves hamming it up and is never embarrassed. That’s the Sarah everyone in Vegas remembers, not the girl dressed in Valentino minding her manners for the cameras with George at the Oscars!”

These pictures are too bad, so I wonder what pictures will surface next. I hope George knows what he’s getting himself into.

George Clooney returns for the ER finale

George Clooney returns for the ER finale

George Clooney returns to ER as Dr. Douglas Ross, in its last season. Producer David Zabela is desperate to get some of the old cast together to celebrate the shows ending.

ER, the hit TV drama will end after its 15th season. Zabel said:

“We want to revisit characters that have existed on the show over the years and say where they are now. We’d love to get them all back in some way - that doesn’t mean we are going to but we are going to try”. george-clooney.jpg

The execs are also interested in bringing back Anthony Edwards even though he died of a brain tumour as Dr. Mark Greene. Zabel added:

“There are ways to do it that we’ve thought about - even if it were like a lost episode from 1996″.

I’m not a huge fan of ER, I was when it was first on. So I will definitely be watching to final episode to watch my George Clooney.
