Inside Details on the End of Heath Ledger’s Life in New Issue of ‘Vanity Fair’

Posted on 29 June 2009 by Lexacahn

Vanity Fair is set to publish an article that reveals a lot of new details about Heath Ledger’s life leading up to his death, specifically about his failed marriage, his child, becoming The Joker, and his drug/alcohol abuse.

Check out a nice long excerpt below!

Why was Heath Ledger so ambivalent about his own stardom, and what happened at the end of his life? Vanity Fair contributing editor Peter Biskind sheds new light on these difficult-to-answer questions as he writes about the actor’s remarkable talent and untimely death in the August cover story, “The Last of Heath.”

In his article, Biskind explores Ledger’s final movie role, his uncertainty about Hollywood, his devotion to his young daughter, and what happened in the days and weeks leading up to his death as he battled chronic insomnia, pneumonia, and exhaustion. Here are some of the revelations contained in Biskind’s story.

The August issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on July 1 and nationally July 7.

How he cleaned up his act

• Cinematographer Nicola Pecorini, who worked with Ledger on his last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, says Ledger “used to smoke marijuana on a regular basis, like probably 50 percent of Americans.” But after it became an issue, Ledger “went clean as a whistle.” And vocal coach Gerry Grennell, who worked and lived with the actor during the filming of The Dark Knight, says Ledger even stopped drinking: “Heath would happily go to the bar, buy a round of drinks for friends, and come back and have a soda or juice, never once drinking alcohol.”

How chronic insomnia may have led to his death

• Ledger’s use of sleeping medication to combat chronic insomnia at the end of his life was of more concern to Grennell. “I’d say, ‘If you can possibly bear it to stop taking the medications, do, because they don’t seem to be doing you any good.’ He agreed. It is very difficult for me to imagine how close he came to not taking them.”

Ledger would typically spend night after night awake, diverting himself with time killers, Biskind reports, such as re-arranging the furniture in whatever space he happened to be living in at the moment. Grennell coached him in the Alexander Technique, which helped him to sleep for a few hours at a time, but he still struggled.

“Everyone has a different view of how he passed away,” Grennell tells Biskind. “From my perspective, and knowing him as well as I did, and being around him as much as I was, it was a combination of exhaustion, sleeping medication … and perhaps the aftereffects of the flu. I guess his body just stopped breathing.”

How his marriage failed

• Terry Gilliam—Ledger’s friend and mentor, and the director of Doctor Parnassus—agrees with Pecorini that the romance between Ledger and Williams began to unravel during the Oscar campaign for Brokeback Mountain. “The whole machinery started growing up around them,” Gilliam says. “That was the moment when it changed, when he realized, Uh-oh. We perceive the world differently. He didn’t care about things like those awards.”

According to Pecorini, “Heath was always blaming himself [about the relationship], asking, What did I do wrong?” Adds Gilliam, “Because he’s a much nicer person than I am, he really thought he could do the right thing. He was trying to be decent and graceful, give her whatever she wanted—the house, every fucking thing. But once it started going south, it went very quickly. He was overwhelmed by lawyers, and there were more and more of them, as if they were breeding. I said, ‘This is bullshit. Heath, just end it. Get out—it’s bad. You’ve got to just walk away from it.’ The stakes kept going up. He wouldn’t listen to any of us.”

As Ledger’s relationship with Williams unraveled, and the pair started dealing with lawyers and custody issues, according to Gilliam, Ledger fell apart. “The thing that really made Heath snap” was legal wrangling over his daughter, Matilda, Gilliam says. “He said, ‘Just fuck all of you! I’m not giving Michelle anything.’” Recalls another source, when it came to Matilda’s care, “there were definitely heated conversations, and emotions were high.” (Ledger’s lawyer declined to comment on any aspect of the separation or custody dispute.)

His devotion to the job

The strife in his personal life coincided with the shoot for Gilliam’s Parnassus, but rather than distract him from his work, Gilliam believes it helped him concentrate on the task at hand, he tells Biskind. He appeared one day on set “clearly bloody sick,” Gilliam says. The doctor told him it was the beginning of pneumonia and that he ought to take antibiotics and go home and rest. According to Gilliam, Ledger said, “No way. I’m not going to go home, because I can’t sleep, and I’ll be just thinking about the situation. I’d rather stay here and work.”

Although “he would arrive in the morning completely knackered,” Gilliam says, “by the end of the day he was beaming, glowing with energy. It was like everything was put into the work, because that was the joy; that’s what he loved to do. The words were just pouring out. It was like he was channeling.”

Ledger’s apathy for stardom

• Ledger’s friend and agent, Steven Alexander, tells Biskind that Heath “was always hesitant to be in a summer blockbuster, with the dolls and action figures and everything else that comes with one of those movies. He was afraid it would define him and limit his choices.” According to friends of Ledger’s, one of the reasons he agreed to do Dark Knight was that the unusually long shoot would give him an excuse to turn down other offers.

Alexander tells Biskind that Ledger had a pay-or-play deal on The Dark Knight—meaning he’d get compensated no matter what—so he felt he had the freedom to do whatever he wanted as the Joker. According to Pecorini, Ledger hoped his performance would be so far-out he’d be fired, and thus become the beneficiary of a lengthy, paid vacation.

“He was ready to bust out of the gate, but he didn’t want to step on the gas and become something that he didn’t want to become: a matinee idol,” says Alexander. “He was a private person, and he didn’t want to share his personal history with the press. It just wasn’t up for sale. That’s part of the reason he initially tore down his career. He wasn’t motivated by money or stardom, but by the respect of his peers, and for people to walk out of a movie theater after they’d seen something that he’d worked on and say, ‘Wow, he really disappeared into that character.’ He was striving to become an ‘illusionist,’ as he called it, able to create characters that weren’t there.”

Heath Ledger, Did He Deserve It?

Posted on 23 February 2009 by Pink Panther

Do you think that he deserved to win even though he is no longer with us?  I will admit that he did an amazing job in Dark Night.  A huge improvement from “10 Things I Hate About You”.  But he will not be able to appreciate this award like other living stars?  I know that its morbid, but do you think he won just because he died or would he have won if he was still alive?

New DVDs This Week

Posted on 11 December 2008 by Michael DeZubiria

The Dark Knight, arguably the best movie to come along in a decade, makes its long-awaited DVD debut this week, heading up a relatively short list of new releases. Not that that matters much, of course, because this movie is so good that there not really  much reason to look for anything else now that you can finally get a copy of your own!

The Dark Knight not only shattered records and flew past expectations, but it completely redefined the very nature of who Batman is and even revolutionized the comic book movie subgenre itself. Obviously, it is Heath Ledger’s powerhouse performance as The Joker that stands far above the rest of the cast, but the movie is full of big names and brilliant performances.

Batman continues his tireless efforts to bring order to Gotham City and round up the criminals that plague the streets, but just when he seems to be making progress the mysterious and morbidly fascinating psychopath known as The Joker emerges, challenging Batman’s beacon of goodness and hope with his own peculiar brand of random but overwhelming violence and terror. In confronting this new enemy, Batman is forced to confront everything he believes and everything he thought he knew about himself.

Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gory Oldman, and Morgan Freeman.

Directed by Christopher Nolan

The Dark Knight (2008), PG-13, 152 mins.

Horton Hears a Who comes off as a run of the mill animated kid’s movie, but it’s actually pretty charming. The message of respecting everyone as a person no matter how small is just a little too happy and neatly packaged, but the movie treads much more treacherous (and more interesting) waters when it introduces a character who dislikes Horton teaching the rest of his community to believe in something they can’t see. Besides, the story is unique and the animation is outstanding. And check out that cast! I imagine if you were impressed with A Bug’s Life you may also get a kick out of this one.

Horton is an elephant who, using his giant elephant ears, hears a cry for help literally coming from a speck of dust. Upon closer inspection, he realizes that there is a whole community living on that speck of dust, and they call themselves Whos. After meeting the mayor of Whoville, Horton agrees to keep the speck of dust in a safe place, but finds himself in all sorts of trouble when he begins telling his friends in his own community about his new discovery.

Voices provided by: Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Carol Burnett, Will Arnett, and Seth Rogen.

Directed by Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino

Horton Hears a Who (2008), G, 86 mins.

Tropic Thunder

WALL-E

Kung Fu Panda

Heath Ledger’s Co-Stars Donate Film Earnings to Daughter Matilda

Posted on 19 August 2008 by ksouthall

Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell have donated the money they made for completing Heath Ledger’s final film role to the late actor’s daughter Matilda, The Sun reports.

The three actors played versions of Ledger’s character, “Tim,” in the film The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

The stars were concerned with Matilda’s future, because Ledger had not updated his will at the time of his death to include his 2-year-old daughter. So they decided collectively that the money they made for the film should go to her.

“That’s extraordinary! And wonderful,” the Sun quoted director Terry Gilliam as saying. “…And when you’re part of that, you think, ‘Ah, this is maybe why I went into the movies in the beginning. I thought it would be full of wonderful people.’”

odd thing to say, but Terry is a little off.

Matilda is currently living with Heath’s ex, Michelle Williams.

Mary-Kate Olsen Is Off The Hook: Heath Ledger Case Finally Closed

Posted on 07 August 2008 by Tammy Cakes

Mary-Kate Olsen is off the hook. She apparently gave the Feds enough info about Heath Ledger’s death to get them off her back.

Federal prosecutors have decided not to pursue a criminal case regarding Heath Ledger’s acquisition of prescription painkillers and sleeping pills, according to the AP:

“Prosecutors in the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan had been overseeing a Drug Enforcement Administration probe into whether the painkillers found in Ledger’s system were obtained illegally. But the prosecutors have bowed out “because they don’t believe there’s a viable target,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no charges have been filed.”

TMZ claims that the DEA kept Heath’s investigation open for as long as they did because they wanted to be in the spotlight a little more. They reportedly interviewed a guy that Heath smoked a joint with back in the 90’s and wanted him to testify in front of the grand jury. Ridiculous.

Thank God they finally closed the case, I’m sick of hearing about it and seeing Mary-Kate’s face everywhere. Leave the damn girl alone. Let her and her troll sister go back in hiding.

Mary-Kate Olsen to be Subpoenaed

Posted on 06 August 2008 by Tammy Cakes

“The federal Drug Enforcement Administration office in New York has confirmed that they have issued a subpoena that would force Mary-Kate Olsen to testify in front of a grand jury.”

Mary-Kate Olsen has been refusing to talk to federal investigators about Heath Ledger’s death until she is granted immunity from prosecution, the New York Post reported Monday.

“Though Olsen’s attorney has rejected multiple requests from federal officials to talk to the actress, she could face a grand-jury subpoena to testify, according to the Post.

“Unlike inquiry into Ledger’s death by the New York Police Department, which was completed with Olsen’s cooperation, federal investigators are seeking information from the actress about where he got his drugs and medicines.”

In a statement issued Monday, Olsen’s lawyers said that the actress had nothing to do with the drugs that killed Heath Ledger and she has already cooperated with police in the investigation.

Access Hollywood broke the news about the subpoena last night but did not give a time line as to when Olsen might be called to testify.

At the time of Heath Ledger’s death, five types of medications were found in his body according to the DEA. Three were obtained through doctors in Texas and Los Angeles and two, Oxycontin and Vicodin, he had acquired somehow without legal prescriptions.

Mary-Kate was the first person Heath’s masseuse contacted after she discovered Heath’s lifeless body on January 22 in his New York apartment.

A lawyer not associated with the case, high-profile defense attorney Benjamin Brafman (who has defended P. Diddy and Michael Jackson in the past), told “Access Hollywood” that seeking immunity is not the same as admitting guilt. “It may not mean anything other than she’s getting good legal advice,” Brafman told the show. “You don’t know what the DEA may suspect in this case, and I think it’s a cautious way to proceed. I think it would be wrong to assume she’s done something criminal simply because she’s invoking her Fifth Amendment against self-incrimination.”

I don’t quite understand why Mary-Kate isn’t talking;she is making herself look more suspicious. I mean one of her really good friends is dead; unless she had something to do with it, I would think she would give up all the info she knows. That stupid troll. It is about time she gets subpoenaed.
