Robert “Joe” Halderman’s lawyer, Gerald L. Shargel, sat down in an interview with The Today Show this morning where he told everyone that David Letterman was a master manipulator.

Shargel made an awkward TV appearance where he stated that he looks “forward to cross-examining David Letterman.  If you only hear David Letterman’s side of the story, take it at face value, and say, ‘Turn off the sets, that Halderman’s guilty’- I think that’s plain wrong.”

“In the history of extortion attempts, there’s never been, as far as I know, someone paying by check,” the attorney said.

Shargel focused on Letterman’s attempts to “get out ahead of the story” with his public mea culpa.

“He’s a master at manipulating audiences, that’s what he does for a living,” said Shargel.  ”So to think that David Letterman gave the entire story, and there’s nothing more to be said, it’s simply wrong.”

Shargel said the 48 Hour Mystery Emmy winning producer had an excellent reputation in the industry and that these allegations that  he tried to asked Letterman for $2 million to pay off his debts makes “absolutely no sense.”

On his late show last night, David Letterman shockingly admitted that he had sexual relations with multiple female employees of his show, and that someone tried to extort him by releasing this information. A CBS employee has since been arrested for the alleged extortion plot.

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Dave said. “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

During last nights taping, Dave uncomfortably discussed receiving a threat to either pay $2 million or risk his relationship and credibility with the public.

Dave explained to the audience, “In the back seat of my car, there’s a package that I don’t recognize. What this is is a guy is going to write a screenplay about me and he’s going to take all the terrible stuff that he knows about my life and he’s going to put it into a movie unless I give him some money.”

“Now of course we get to what is it. What was all the creepy stuff that he was going to put into the screenplay and the movie, and the creepy stuff that I had … sex with women who work for me on the show. Now, my response to that is yes, I have,” he continued.

RadarOnline was the first to report that the suspect under arrest is Robert J. Halderman, a producer from CBS’s true-crime show “48 Hours”.

Halderman supposedly lived with one of the women who Dave was involved with. The affair happened before his son Harry was born but during his relationship with his now wife, Regina Lasko. The woman still works on the show but is no longer involved with Dave.

It is believed that the reason why Halderman extorted Dave was because he  needed money and decided to take a shot at getting it from Dave.
