Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza have been arrested and charged with indecency after becoming the first gay couple to wed in Malawir.
Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza, were married on Saturday in a traditional Malawi ceremony despite risk of imprisonment because homosexuality is illegal in the African state.
Dave Chingwalu, a police spokesperson, stated,
We arrested them (Tiwonge Chimbalange and Steven Monjeza) last night at their home and charged them with gross public indecency because the practice is against the law.
Sadly, the maximum sentence for homosexuality is 14 years in prison.
Today, Wednesday October 28th, our favorite Material Girl reaches out to a good cause, and encourages us to join her!
Taking to the Huffington Post, Madonna calls for immediate action:
“I am making a straightforward request, I’m writing to urge you to join me in saving the lives of some of the worlds most vulnerable children. And I’m asking you to do it right away.”
Raising Malawi is the organization that Madonna co-founded in 2006 which is dedicated to ending the poverty and hardship endured my Malawi’s one-million orphans. In this mornings post, Madonna describes the connection she feels with the vulnerable children, specifically the girls whose “lives are made even more difficult simply because of their gender.”
In order to kick things off and encourage others to support the cause, Madonna pledged $100,000 along with matching the contributions dollar-to-dollar.
It’s great to continue to see celebrities like Madonna working hard to better the lives of those less fortunate. In addition her enthusiastic encouragement to the outside world is inspiring. I think the only obvious question left to ask is, “Will you Join?”

Looks like Madonna wont be getting the 3 year old Malawi girl she was hoping to adopt. Judge Esme Chombo denied Madonna’s petition for adoption this week because Madonna is not a resident of Malawi. She was rich lucky enough to have this rule waived back in 2006 when she adopted David Banda, but I am sure this time her divorce and recent love interest played a role.
I am glad Madonna’s petition was denied. I am still trying to figure out why she is adopting children who have family members caring for them. If she really wants to give a child a chance sponsor the whole family so they can stay together or adopt a child that has no loved ones around to care for them. What do you think?
