Michelle Williams Talks About Heath Ledger in Vogue

Posted on 15 September 2009 by Lexacahn

Michelle Williams is on the cover of the October issue of Vogue and became very candid about her deceased ex-husband Heath Ledger:

Michelle Williams finds it hard to talk about Heath Ledger — her former fiance with whom she has a daughter named Mathilda — who tragically died early last year. “I didn’t know what my boundaries were for a long time, which made interviews feel very unsafe. I can talk about grief, because that’s mine; about single parenting; about trying to balance work and kids. But what I don’t have to talk about is what happened between Heath and me in our relationship,” she tells Vogue in the October issue.

Coping after Ledger’s untimely death: “I was holding it together by a string and a paper clip in the fall and winter. I didn’t know if I could keep it all together… You console yourself by saying it’s all a deepening process. But it’s wired. After the first year, the pain is less intense; it’s less immediate. But the magical thinking goes away too. And that’s a whole new reckoning. But every time I really miss him and wonder where he’s gone, I just look at [Mathilda.]”

The happy times: “‘Brokeback Mountain’ was an unrepeatable moment in time, a very charmed time in my life. I was in love; I was in a movie I was proud to be a part of, and with a beautiful brand-new baby. Everything was good in that moment.”

Dealing with the paparazzi presence: “It’s because of this tragedy that there’s more paparazzi. That is hard to be graceful and understanding about… It’s hard to be the man and the woman in that [paparazzi] situation. Heath always used to do that for us.”

Falling in love: “I thought falling in love again was the only thing that was going to save me from the pain. This erroneous idea: It just makes things more complicated.”

What the future holds: “I feel hopeful and grateful. For a while I thought we had lost everything. It makes you want to love better and liver better.”

Inside Details on the End of Heath Ledger’s Life in New Issue of ‘Vanity Fair’

Posted on 29 June 2009 by Lexacahn

Vanity Fair is set to publish an article that reveals a lot of new details about Heath Ledger’s life leading up to his death, specifically about his failed marriage, his child, becoming The Joker, and his drug/alcohol abuse.

Check out a nice long excerpt below!

Why was Heath Ledger so ambivalent about his own stardom, and what happened at the end of his life? Vanity Fair contributing editor Peter Biskind sheds new light on these difficult-to-answer questions as he writes about the actor’s remarkable talent and untimely death in the August cover story, “The Last of Heath.”

In his article, Biskind explores Ledger’s final movie role, his uncertainty about Hollywood, his devotion to his young daughter, and what happened in the days and weeks leading up to his death as he battled chronic insomnia, pneumonia, and exhaustion. Here are some of the revelations contained in Biskind’s story.

The August issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on July 1 and nationally July 7.

How he cleaned up his act

• Cinematographer Nicola Pecorini, who worked with Ledger on his last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, says Ledger “used to smoke marijuana on a regular basis, like probably 50 percent of Americans.” But after it became an issue, Ledger “went clean as a whistle.” And vocal coach Gerry Grennell, who worked and lived with the actor during the filming of The Dark Knight, says Ledger even stopped drinking: “Heath would happily go to the bar, buy a round of drinks for friends, and come back and have a soda or juice, never once drinking alcohol.”

How chronic insomnia may have led to his death

• Ledger’s use of sleeping medication to combat chronic insomnia at the end of his life was of more concern to Grennell. “I’d say, ‘If you can possibly bear it to stop taking the medications, do, because they don’t seem to be doing you any good.’ He agreed. It is very difficult for me to imagine how close he came to not taking them.”

Ledger would typically spend night after night awake, diverting himself with time killers, Biskind reports, such as re-arranging the furniture in whatever space he happened to be living in at the moment. Grennell coached him in the Alexander Technique, which helped him to sleep for a few hours at a time, but he still struggled.

“Everyone has a different view of how he passed away,” Grennell tells Biskind. “From my perspective, and knowing him as well as I did, and being around him as much as I was, it was a combination of exhaustion, sleeping medication … and perhaps the aftereffects of the flu. I guess his body just stopped breathing.”

How his marriage failed

• Terry Gilliam—Ledger’s friend and mentor, and the director of Doctor Parnassus—agrees with Pecorini that the romance between Ledger and Williams began to unravel during the Oscar campaign for Brokeback Mountain. “The whole machinery started growing up around them,” Gilliam says. “That was the moment when it changed, when he realized, Uh-oh. We perceive the world differently. He didn’t care about things like those awards.”

According to Pecorini, “Heath was always blaming himself [about the relationship], asking, What did I do wrong?” Adds Gilliam, “Because he’s a much nicer person than I am, he really thought he could do the right thing. He was trying to be decent and graceful, give her whatever she wanted—the house, every fucking thing. But once it started going south, it went very quickly. He was overwhelmed by lawyers, and there were more and more of them, as if they were breeding. I said, ‘This is bullshit. Heath, just end it. Get out—it’s bad. You’ve got to just walk away from it.’ The stakes kept going up. He wouldn’t listen to any of us.”

As Ledger’s relationship with Williams unraveled, and the pair started dealing with lawyers and custody issues, according to Gilliam, Ledger fell apart. “The thing that really made Heath snap” was legal wrangling over his daughter, Matilda, Gilliam says. “He said, ‘Just fuck all of you! I’m not giving Michelle anything.’” Recalls another source, when it came to Matilda’s care, “there were definitely heated conversations, and emotions were high.” (Ledger’s lawyer declined to comment on any aspect of the separation or custody dispute.)

His devotion to the job

The strife in his personal life coincided with the shoot for Gilliam’s Parnassus, but rather than distract him from his work, Gilliam believes it helped him concentrate on the task at hand, he tells Biskind. He appeared one day on set “clearly bloody sick,” Gilliam says. The doctor told him it was the beginning of pneumonia and that he ought to take antibiotics and go home and rest. According to Gilliam, Ledger said, “No way. I’m not going to go home, because I can’t sleep, and I’ll be just thinking about the situation. I’d rather stay here and work.”

Although “he would arrive in the morning completely knackered,” Gilliam says, “by the end of the day he was beaming, glowing with energy. It was like everything was put into the work, because that was the joy; that’s what he loved to do. The words were just pouring out. It was like he was channeling.”

Ledger’s apathy for stardom

• Ledger’s friend and agent, Steven Alexander, tells Biskind that Heath “was always hesitant to be in a summer blockbuster, with the dolls and action figures and everything else that comes with one of those movies. He was afraid it would define him and limit his choices.” According to friends of Ledger’s, one of the reasons he agreed to do Dark Knight was that the unusually long shoot would give him an excuse to turn down other offers.

Alexander tells Biskind that Ledger had a pay-or-play deal on The Dark Knight—meaning he’d get compensated no matter what—so he felt he had the freedom to do whatever he wanted as the Joker. According to Pecorini, Ledger hoped his performance would be so far-out he’d be fired, and thus become the beneficiary of a lengthy, paid vacation.

“He was ready to bust out of the gate, but he didn’t want to step on the gas and become something that he didn’t want to become: a matinee idol,” says Alexander. “He was a private person, and he didn’t want to share his personal history with the press. It just wasn’t up for sale. That’s part of the reason he initially tore down his career. He wasn’t motivated by money or stardom, but by the respect of his peers, and for people to walk out of a movie theater after they’d seen something that he’d worked on and say, ‘Wow, he really disappeared into that character.’ He was striving to become an ‘illusionist,’ as he called it, able to create characters that weren’t there.”

Shutter Island Trailer

Posted on 17 June 2009 by Tammy Cakes

Here is the trailer for Martin Scorsese’s newest film Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Michelle Williams, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley.

Shutter Island, based on the book by Dennis Lehane, is a thriller set in 1954, about U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) investigation of  the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. Not long after his arrival on the island, Teddy begins to wonder whether he hasn’t been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals “escape” in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything – his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

It looks like a really good movie. I’m very surprised that it is a Scorsese film and that Leo is part of it. I hope that means that movie is better than the trailer makes it look.

Michelle Williams Revealing Interview with Wonderland

Posted on 14 February 2008 by Tammy Cakes

michelle-williams-wonderland.jpg

Michelle Williams has been one of few celebrities to be able to keep her private life out of the public eye. Until recently that is, after her ex-boyfriend’s, Heath Ledger’s, death. In the new issue of Wonderland, Michelle gives a very revealing interview, before the death of her ex.

In this magazine she shares stories of her past, present, and furture.

On how fame has changed since the days of Dawson’s Creek:
“People weren’t paying attention to who we were dating, what we were wearing or drinking. We were pretty much left alone. We got off scot-free because if the paparazzi had come down then there certainly would have been things to talk about.”

On whether she attended Katie Holmes’ wedding:
“Everybody wants to know that. No, I didn’t go because I was working on The Tourist. To be honest, we’re not really in touch.”

On living with Christina Ricci while shooting Prozac Nation:
“There weren’t a lot of nights in. I was about 19. We were wild. I’m so glad I had those times before I had a child. We were both in dark places and thankfully had each other to go through it with. Luckily it was shot in Canada so we could drink legally.”

On whether she’d describe herself as vain:
“I have insecurity masquerading as vanity. I don’t think I’m vain as an actress but I’m probably more so as a person. Again, it goes back to that thing about when I’m working is the only time when I don’t judge myself… While I’m working I really don’t give a f*** how I look. Afterwards, if I have to watch it, I might have some problems.”

On being voted one of People magazine’s Most Beautiful People last year:
“The positive comments and good feedback never really touches you. There can be 100 great reviews but you only listen to the one bad one. I can only absorb the negativity, which is a flaw. I wouldn’t recommend that approach.”

Michelle Williams revealing interview with Wonderland

On her body image:
“I feel like I didn’t have any relationship with my body before Matilda. Well I did, but it was just a bad one. After having my daughter I can’t judge myself in the same way. My body has done this totally miraculous but utterly ordinary thing.”

On looking up to her Synecdoche, New York costar Philip Seymour Hoffman:
“I mean, I’ve had nightmares… where I go on stage and Philip Seymour Hoffman is watching.”

On how motherhood has changed her:

“The downside is that my vocabulary has shrunk to the size of a pea. Since having a kid, I just don’t have the same access to the world. I don’t see as many shows, I don’t go to many movies and I hardly read any books anymore. I’m lucky to make it through a book a month. So you start to develop in a much more nonverbal way, which can be so frustrating. Also there’s been a lot going on in my personal life and part of me is… I don’t know. I shouldn’t talk about it but it’s like I’m reemerging back into the world or something.”

On playing a surgeon in her new film Mammoth
:
“The whole experience has been such an eye-opener… I had this weird sensation where I thought, ‘Oh f***, I’ve missed my calling’. The sense of purpose made me wish I’d become a doctor.”

On looking forward to her thirties:
“I don’t really have a concept of my thirties. Obviously so much has changed for me in the last few months that I don’t really have an idea of what my life is going to be. I thought I knew certain things and it turned out that I didn’t so I don’t really try and anticipate so much anymore. I’m not making any bets on the future.”

ET pulls the plug on Heath Ledger video

Posted on 01 February 2008 by Cindy

CNN is reporting that Entertainment Tonight decided not to air a video of Heath Ledger at a party that showed drugs being used (by others) in his presence. ET said it was out of respect for his grieving family that they decided to pull the plug on airing the video; however, it may be more likely that ET decided not to air the video because of all the phone calls they received (because at first request they refused and were going to air it). It is being reported that not only did powerhouse PR firms and studio executives call in to request that it not be aired, but individual celebrities such as Natalie Portman and Sarah Jessica Parker called ET as well.

Heath Ledger

Apparently, in the video, he is never shown taking any drugs, but does say he “used to smoke five joints a day.” He also points to his tattoo of “M” and says, “this is to remind me to never smoke weed again.” (source: CNN)
Seriously, airing such a video just seems like nothing but pure sensationalism–he obviously was not seen doing any drugs, so what’s the point? Who hasn’t been to a party where drugs are present (especially in show biz)?

Heath Ledger found in his apartment dead

Posted on 22 January 2008 by Cindy

It is very saddening to hear that actor Heath Ledger, 28, was found dead today at 3:26 p.m. eastern time in his Manhattan apartment. He was an awesome actor that seemed to never get caught up in all the Hollywood Bull*%$!

It is being reported that his housekeeper knocked on his bedroom door to notify him that his masseuse had arrived. When he did not answer the door the housekeeper and masseuse entered the room.

TMZ is reporting that he was “face down on the floor;” however, NY Times is reporting, he was “naked and unconscious on a bed–the housekeeper and masseuse shook him, but he did not respond.”

Police Lieutenant John Grimpal was on the scene and has said that drugs were found, but the type is unknown at this time– it is now being reported that the pills found were possibly sleeping drugs (a medical examiner wil be determining the cause of death on Wednesday).

Heath’s latest movie, “The Dark Knight,” hasn’t hit the screens yet, but he did just finish all the filming. “The Dark Knight” is the sequel to “Batman Begins.” Heath played the prized role of The Joker.

Heath previously had earned an Oscar nomination for Brokeback Mountain and starred in many notable films, such as, “A Knight’s Tale,” “The Patriot,” and “Monster’s Ball.”

Heath, born in 1979 in Perth, Australia, leaves behind his 2 year old daughter, Matilda. Matilda’s mother is Michelle Williams. Heath met Michelle during the filming of “Brokeback Mountain” (she played the role of his wife in the film). They and their daughter together in Brooklyn until they split up last year.

Undoubtedly, Heath will be missed by many.
