Close Encounters of ‘The Fourth Kind’

Posted on 16 November 2009 by Michael DeZubiria

The Fourth Kind posterIt is fast becoming the popular thing to do to make horror movies based on real events, and director Olatunde Osunsanmi wants so badly for his new horror/thriller The Fourth Kind to be one of those movies that he goes so far as to open the film by having the star, Milla Jovovich, look directly into the camera and introduce herself as actress Milla Jovovich, and then explain that in the movie she will be portraying real life psychiatrist Abigail Tyler in reference to events that took place in beautiful Nome, Alaska in the first week of October, 2000. It is hugely disappointing to discover that none of the events portrayed in the film are even remotely based on real events, but as a supernatural horror/thriller, the movie at least is presented in a clever and effective way. Oh, and it was cool having Jovovich introduce herself like that, too, because we get to hear the correct pronunciation of her name. I’m guessing most of you have it wrong.

So, by clever and effective, I mean that the movie makes frequent use of split screens to show us actors portraying actual interviews conducted by Tyler, synching them up so that we can see that the recreations are done word for word. This seems to cancel out the need to re-shoot anything, since the “original” tapes are much more interesting and effective, but it does add another level of realism to the proceedings.

So here’s the story. Abigail Tyler is a psychiatrist in Nome, Alaska, and several of her patients have been reporting the same strange dream involving an owl peering at them through their bedroom windows accompanied by a profound, almost paralyzing feeling of hopelessness. Under hypnosis, they seem to remember something terrifying that they couldn’t recall while fully conscious, and so Abigail sets out to find out what is really going on. Milla Jovovich as Abigail Tyler in The Fourth KindDisturbing numbers of people disappear from the tiny town without a trace every year with talk of alien abduction (the “fourth kind” of alien encounter), and evidently there have been a disproportionate number of FBI visits there, but without the truth ever being discovered. Suspicions of a federal cover-up lead Abigail to conduct her own investigation.

There is a nice sense of dread throughout the movie, as we watch Abigail, an educated, professional woman, conduct a series of interviews and hypnosis sessions, bringing her closer and closer to an impossible truth. The police don’t believe her because she starts to suggest alien abductions and cops tend to lose credibility when they agree with such things, and we know something is going to go wrong because throughout the movie we are watching interviews of her taken long after the events in the movie, and she appears to be in some kind of mental institution. The Fourth KindSuicides soon begin to pile up, and the disappearance of her daughter leads to questions about her sanity.

There are some technical problems with the movie, but my only real complaint about it is that they really hammer home the fictional idea that this is all based on real events. I don’t even want to try to remember how many times we were politely informed that we were listening to “actual audio” from the original interviews, which is completely obvious already, or when people performing in “re-enactments” are identified in on-screen titles as actors. Yeah, we get it. I don’t think we need to be hit over the head with it. Still the movie is an entertaining and clever take on an old idea, and contains a good performance from Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas as her colleague, and Will Patton as the incredulous sheriff. It’s not one of the best thrillers of the year (or even the best one in theaters at the moment), but it’s entertaining and has a couple good scares, and that’s really all we ask, isn’t it?

Milla Jovovich Marries Paul Anderson

Posted on 24 August 2009 by Tammy Cakes

milla-jovoich-paul-anderson-married-3Resident Evil actress Milla Jovovich married longtime boyfriend Paul Anderson on Saturday at their Beverly Hills home.

Milla wore a Grecian-style white gown, which she designed herself , and a gold crown as she walked down the aisle in the backyard decorated with red and white floral arrangements.

Milla and Paul met while he directed her on Resident Evil, and they’ve been together ever since. They have a 2o month old daughter, Ever Gabo.

Congrats to the happy couple!

Milla Jovovich married director Paul W.S. Anderson in an intimate outdoor ceremony at their home in Beverly Hills on Saturday, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The bride, 33, wore a ’60’s-style mini dress she designed herself as she walked down the aisle in the backyard of the couple’s Spanish-style house, decorated with red and white floral arrangements.

The couple exchanged matching 18k Neil Lane classic gold wedding bands, to go with Jovovich’s 19th century vintage gold engagement ring with colored pink, yellow and white diamonds.

Among the 50 guests in attendance was actor Patrick Dempsey and his wife Jillian. The couple’s 20-month-old daughter Ever Gabo was also present.

“They’re a super duper couple,” says Lane of the newlyweds. “They clearly adore each other.”

Before the ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail reception by the pool, where a Spanish guitarist and a female vocalist entertained with traditional Spanish music.

After the ceremony, there was a reception that included entertainment by Cuban musicians playing traditional Cuban drums. The wedding cake was a round, four-tiered white cake decorated with a ribbon.

Jovovich and Anderson, 44, first met in 2002, when he directed her in the box office hit Resident Evil. They welcomed daughter Ever Gabo in November 2006.

“Having a child has completely changed the way I look at my life,” Jovovich told PEOPLE earlier this year. “I don’t worry about my career or what other people think about me. My main priority now is my child and my family.”

As for what the future holds for the couple? “I definitely want more kids!” Jovovich said. “I grew up as an only child, so I’ve always wanted to have a big family. I don’t know what the future will hold, but knock on wood, I hope it’ll bring me a big family.”

The actress can currently be seen opposite Steve Zahn and Timothy Olyphant in the thriller A Perfect Getaway, which premiered on August 7. Anderson’s latest film, which he wrote and directed, was 2008’s Death Race starring Jason Stratham.

Honeymoon Horror! ‘A Perfect Getaway’ Review…

Posted on 13 August 2009 by Michael DeZubiria

A Perfect Getaway posterOf all of the rare movie breeds – such as the good teen horror movie, the impressive first (or second) sequel, or the bad Nicholas Cage movie (yeah, you heard me) – one of the rarest is the formula thriller that rises above its genre and not only entertains but even manages to dig some surprises out of the sand and prevent the third act from being an intolerably boring exercise in violent predictability. Big screen thrillers tend to do nothing for me, they always seem to come off as diluted horror films with wispy threads of a plot strung along a lot of half-baked sex scenes permeated with some miscellaneous combination of suspicion and betrayal and whatnot. Yawn. But A Perfect Getaway is a pleasant surprise on several different levels.

The movie sets itself up as a typical thriller, we meet a lot of suspicious characters in the first 25 minutes or so before the cast happens upon three vacationing sorority girls standing around in the wilderness making apprehensive exclamations to each other about the murderer that they just heard is loose on the island with them. At this point it feels like all the ingredients have been haphazardly tossed into the movie and we can only sit back and watch all the rest of the pieces fall into place. But director David Twohy understands how to manipulate the ingredients enough to trick us into thinking we’re seeing something fresh and original.

Twohy is, however, more experienced as a writer than a director, but his helming skills are clearly developing nicely, while his writing skills seem to have suffered. I’ll tell you why in a minute, but in the past he has built a fairly extensive list of sort of writing credits, despite having only helmed half a dozen disappointing movies in the last almost 20 years like Pitch Black, The Arrival, and The Chronicles of Riddick, but he seems to be finding his groove behind the camera. This is definitely his best film to date.Milla Jovovich, Kiele Sanchez, Timothy Olyphant, and Steve Zahn

So here’s the plot in 100 words – Two newlyweds honeymooning in Hawaii learn of some grisly murders and two killers at large, a man and a woman. Soon afterwards they encounter two other suspicious couples, and together they embark on an uncomfortable journey through the remote Hawaiian wilderness, all the while trying to act all normal like they don’t suspect everyone around them of being murderers. Complicating matters is that all of the suspects tend to sporadically act like lunatics. Criminal records, mysterious military pasts, a petite brunette with the butchering skills of Fritz Haarmann, etc. Find the killers and get out alive. Or both. Preferably both.

That’s easier said than done in thrillers, of course, but what sets A Perfect Getaway apart from it’s weaker counterparts is that it doesn’t focus solely on the tired tension of the central characters trying to get out without getting all killed first, it moves in the direction of being more of an intense character drama. And thankfully, the performances are good. The main characters are Cliff and Cydney (Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich), who show here that they have both made huge developments as actors during their careers. Tinothy Olyphant and Kiele SanchezTimothy Olyphant, who you might remember as the villain in Die Hard 4, uses his Jack Nicholson-like appearance as Nick, probably fitting into his role more comfortably than anyone else in the movie.  Kiele Sanchez plays Gina, Nick’s girlfriend, and Marley Shelton and Chris Hemsworth play Cleo and Kale, the most unhinged-looking couple in the movie.

The only real complaint I have about the movie is that the characters spend significant amounts of time, on more than one occasion, talking about acting and screenwriting and things like that. This isn’t a problem in itself, but I have a secret theory that anytime you see someone in a movie having a conversation about screenwriting, it’s because there was a screenwriter (in this case also the director) who ran out of ideas. But even though all of the parts of a formula thriller are in place, and the movie even has an unshakable mechanical feel, the entertainment level is high and there are some good surprises at the end. And seriously, what more have we ever asked from a good thriller?

Milla Jovovich Strips Down For Maxim

Posted on 12 August 2009 by Tammy Cakes

milla-jovovich-maximMilla Jovovich is in the new September 2009 issue of Maxim magazine in which she stripped down to her skimpies to show her fans her amazing post-baby body. In the issue she talks about her new movies: A Perfect Getaway, Resident Evil 4, and Stone, training and being a dream girl for geeks.

On her second time on the cover of Maxim: “It’s very cool. I was so excited for the shoot, and it was funny, because your stylist was like ‘It’s up to you how far you want to go. We have dresses and all that.’ I was like, ‘Look, I do Vogue, OK? I’m not doing this to advertise a designer; I had a little girl recently, and I’m doing this to show my post-baby body.’ Lingerie and a sheet were all I needed.”

“I know it’s all about my body. I want to give readers exactly what the want, and they want to see me.”

On her new movie A Perfect Getaway: “It’s a thriller, but it’s also a bit of a mystery. Steve Zahn and I play a couple on our honeymoon in Hawaii, and we take this super-rough hike. The movie takes a very frightening turn when we learn that there are killers on the loose. It’s definitely a twister.”

milla-jovovich-maxim-6On having a really bad vacation: “I had a grueling trip to Peru once. I was in the middle of nowhere with my mom and a couple of friends, and we just weren’t prepared for the intensity of the hikes. At one point my mom was like [in Russian accent], ‘They must send helicopter, or I will have heart attack.’ I was worried we might not make it out alive!”

On working since she was very young: “I’ve been modeling since I was 11 years old. Yet compared with other young celebrities, you pretty much stayed out of trouble.”

milla-jovovich-maxim-2On the most rebellious thing she’s ever done: “Being on the cover of  High Times as a teen. I was performing music at that time-and smoking pot- and the guys from High Times came to one of my shows. They were like, ‘Hey, wanna be on the cover?’ It was just one of those stupid things you do when you’re young. I thought it was a big joke, but my poor mom was so mortified. But it could’ve been a lot worse. When you look at all the horror stories of young, successful kids, I’m glad I didn’t end up dead.”

On watching her own movies: “I actually saw Zoolander the other day. It was funny, man. I heard something about a sequel, and if they do it, I really hope they bring back Katinka.”

On a Fifth Element sequel: “If there were one, there’d have to be another incarnation of my character. Leeloo has to stay forever the way she was. She’s very special.”

On the fourth Resident Evil movie: “We’re shooting it at the end of the month. I’d get in a lot of trouble if I hinted at anything. Let’s just say that the clones come back and leave it at that.”

milla-jovovich-maxim-3On her training for the movie: “I do a lot of training for these films so I can do my own stunts. I think fans of Resident Evil love to know that it’s really me doing everything. I definitely want to give that to them.”

On being a dream girl for geeks:“I love that, man! I think it’s great, because it means that smart men like me. Plus, nerdy guys are always the cool one in the end. I mean, who wants to date a stupid jock? I think that, eventually, the nerds get the cool girls. Just do what you do really well and everything else will fall into place.”

On her new movie Stone, featuring Robert De Niro and Ed Norton:“I just finished filming that. It was such an incredible project, and I was so happy to get it. I worked really hard for the part…I had to do some really intense auditioning with Edward and Bob.
