Respond to ‘Call + Response’

Posted on 29 September 2008 by NotSoMuch

Call + Response” reveals the world’s 27 million dirtiest secrets—there are more slaves today than ever before in human history. This unique feature documentary is first of its kind, involving several prominent political and cultural figures, including Madeline Albright, Ashley Judd and Cornel West, all coming together in hopes of getting the world to act on the shocking reality of human slavery in modern society.

Call + Response” attempts to serve as the first of many interactive activism projects and really focuses on community-based participation. The fact that the entire film was funded completely by donation is a testament to the power of every individual.

With that said, “Call + Response” refers to the well-known form of musical styling dating back to the American slave fields. Naturally, music is an integral part of this movement and film. Performances from a number of amazing artists such as, Moby, Talib Kwelli, Switchfoot, Natasha Bedingfield, Imogen Heap and Five for Fighting can be viewed in hopes of sparking that “spontaneous verbal and non-verbal interaction between speaker and listener” and getting the world to stand up and respond to the 27 million slaves’ call for help.

So check out the trailer below and the website for more information on this revolutionary movement. Furthermore, support the film, which is out nationally on October 10th, in anyway you can, especially since all of the profits will go to fund global field projects such as this.

Not Your Typical “Ghost Town”

Posted on 17 September 2008 by NotSoMuch

Middle-aged Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) and nine-year old Cole Sear (“The Sixth Sense”) may be two completely different people, but they have at least one thing in common—the ability to see dead people. While Cole seemed to have been born with this supernatural skill, Bertram’s was a mishap miracle. During a “routine” colonoscopy, socially challenged Bertram dies…for seven minutes and once revived, later discovers that ghosts have an affinity for him.

In order to get rid of the pesky spirits, Bertram strikes a deal with one, Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear), who wants Bertram to stop the upcoming marriage of his widow Glen (Tea Leoni).

Though at a first glance, “Ghost Town” may seem a far cry from “The Sixth Sense”, I have to wonder. I mean, it’s basically guy sees dead people. Dead people need help. Guy helps dead people. Same plot line, but less scary, no? With that said, “Ghost Town” seems like it could be a pretty promising film. Didn’t “The Sixth Sense” do amazingly well?

If you think my opinion sucks, that’s fine. But why not check out the trailer below for yourself and see if there isn’t some validity to . Or better yet, check the film out when it hits theaters today Friday, September 19th. Maybe I’ll see you there.

Don LaFontaine, ‘King Of Voiceovers,’ Passes Away

Posted on 02 September 2008 by tammy

You may not know his name, but you definitely know his voice. Don LaFontaine is the man with the distinguished voice behind movie trailers. Sadly, LaFontaine passed away in LA yesterday at the age of 68, due to complications from Pneumothorax, the presence of air or gas in the pleural cavity, the result of a collapsed lung. However, the official cause of death has not yet been released.

Over the past 25 years, Don’s extraordinarily unique voice has appeared on over 5,000 movie trailers and 350,000 commercials. He is most famous for the introductory line, “In a world where…”

LaFontaine most recently appeared in a Geico Insurance commercial, where he was referred to as “that announcer guy.”

He is survived by his wife, singer/actress Nita Whitaker, and three children Christine, Skye and Elyse.

This is super sad news. I know he’s not an actor, but I can’t imagine what movie trailers will sound like without him. He has an awesome voice like none other!
