American swimmer, Eric Shanteau, has revealed he is battling testicular cancer. Eric found out about a week before the Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska.
With the go ahead from his doctor, he decided to compete to try and gain a spot on the U.S. team. He ended up winning and had a difficult choice to make.
“If I didn’t make the team, the decision would have been easy: Go home and have the surgery. I made the team, so I had a hard decision. But, by no means am I being stupid about this.”
He has said that if the cancer starts to spread while in Beijing he will drop out and have the surgery that was recommended at the time of diagnosis.
Best of luck to Eric with everything!!
