Woody Allen appeared in a U.S. District court in Manhattan on Monday to file a lawsuit against American Apparel for $10 million for using his image without his consent. Apparently American Apparel has been using Allen’s image from a scene in “Annie Hall” were he is dressed as a Hasidic Jew for their billboard and website ads.
Allen is claiming that he has never given American Apparel permission to use his image for any of their advertisements. Allen stated in court that he does not endorse U.S. commercial products or services. The lawsuit also states that this makes the May 2007 billboards and websites for American Apparel “especially egregious and damaging.” Woody Allen described himself in his lawsuit as one of the most influential figures in the history of film and claims that he maintains strict control over all projects that he is associated with.
