Awards, awards, awards!

The American Film Institute announced its winners for Movies and TV Programs of the Year today, giving us a look at ten contenders who might repeat when the Oscar nominations are announced.

Amongst some pretty obvious choices like Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Argo, Les Miserables, and Zero Dark Thirty (all of which are basically shoo-ins for Best Picture nods) there were a few that won’t necessarily repeat at the Oscars, including one crowd-pleasing superhero flick that stands out amongst the other awards-bait choices.

Tomorrow, the final Twilight film will be released in theaters, ending the saga of Edward and Bella for good. (Or at least until Stephenie Meyer decides it's time to purchase her own island and writes a sequel.) Will Breaking Dawn Part 2 live up to the other films in the series? Will it somehow surpass them to become the best of the franchise? Or will it be a total letdown?

As a general rule, sequels seldom surpass the original in terms of quality, and the final film in any series tends to be the last for a reason. (Usually, because it’s not good.) In honor of the culmination of the Twilight saga, let’s take a look back at other blockbuster film franchises and see whether or not the final installment lived up to expectations.

Some Halloween costumes endure through the ages ― zombies, vampires, and slutty cats, to name a few. Others are only topical for a brief window of time ― one year, or perhaps only a matter of months.

In 2012, we've seen pop culture events such as the Olympics, a presidential campaign, a kooky South Korean music video that shook the world, a potential zombie apocalypse, and a lot of women suddenly curious about S&M. If you think these trends will fail to show themselves come October 31, then think again.
